Cignetti was making $677,311 during his final season at James Madison.  He’s already nearly tripled that figure just from bonuses tied to the 2025 season.  That follows a 2024 season during which he more than doubled his JMU salary with bonuses earned at IU.

In total Cignetti has earned bonuses of $1.9 million during this 13-0 Big Ten Championship season.  Here’s detail on what Cignetti has already earned this year, with the potential to make more during the College Football Playoff:

  • $150,000 for six Big Ten wins.
  • $1 million for a Big Ten championship.
  • $600,000 for reaching the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.  He can still earn $700,000 for reaching the semifinals, $1 million for reaching the national title game, and $2 million for winning a national championship.
  • $50,000 for winning Big Ten Coach of the Year, whether through the coaches vote or the media vote.
  • $100,000 for winning any of the major National Coach of the Year honors (AP, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, Sporting News, Walter Camp, Maxwell Football Club, or ABC/ESPN).

Actually saw an article today taking a serious look at how much Cignetti would need to buy himself out of the Indiana contract so he could take the Michigan job! Personally, at this point, I will be surprised if they get anything close to an elite coach!

Ha.  And I agree, this may be a so-so hire for them.

I’m looking at the betting odds for the UM job.  About 25 candidates listed.  Cig isn’t one, not even on the board right now.

I read about the first 30 pages of the MSU board posted from the link in the other thread, and they are hearing that they stick with an interim for the next season if they don't get someone UM wants.  They would be crazy to do that and be stuck like OSU in their basketball with a Diebler situation.

They will get gutted in the portal then.

And what goes from our hardest road game next year goes to somewhere alongside Rutgers.

"Cignetti was a landslide winner for coach of the year in voting by the nationwide panel of 52 media members who cover college football. Cignetti received 47 first-place votes. Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire and Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea received two each, and Virginia’s Tony Elliott got one."

Cig *hearts* Pat McAfee:

If I didn’t already know and you told me to pick the two least likely football characters to really, truly like Pat I think I’d choose Cig and Saban. And they both LOVE him. (And I’m pretty certain aren’t fans of each other)
