General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

I'd be okay with May. Not particularly enthused but I can see a possibility, after this year I see the possibility easier than I did with Miller.

Take away the coach in waiting for his son and I'd gladly take a run at Pearl and stabilize the program for about a decade.

Morning everyone. Just wanted to give an update. I know we all have heard a lot of bs recently so I want to make it clear that I am not guaranteeing anything.

last night there was a shift. People in my circle and people I hear things from went from confusion to all thinking a deal is in place with an announcement in march. Sometime after the regular season, maybe before the big ten tournament but probably before the ncaa tourney.

im starting to think that I jumped the gun on Friday and got a little excited and starting saying we were further along than we were, and that’s on me. If you think about it logically, why would IU announce the next head coach when ours is still coaching? Especially with how nasty woody is being behind the scenes. I do think the Goodman post was intentional to keep noise down because we have a ways to go, again i refer to nick saban saying he will never be the coach of Alabama 13 days before it was announced the coach of Alabama. Obviously if he hasn’t signed yet he could back out at anytime.

if you think I am full of it I understand, I don’t claim to be an insider, I just share things I hear from people who are usually accurate on what they say, but this is where I stand. Go Hoosiers!

Never thought we'd announce a coach before the our season ends in the BTT. Thinking otherwise seems more far-fetched than thinking BS was a real shot for us.

I will do you all a favor a leave this board

This board is like a cult and the insiders are Jim Jones and and the others are the followers. If you question the leaders then the followers jump anyone who question the cult

Have fun in fantasy land

See you in a couple weeks.

To get past the sweet 16, regularly. If you're going to quote me with a pro Cronin post, save it. Lol... couldn't find many more uninspiring hires for me, but hey he yells a lot?

Per a quick search, only 20 coaches in NCAA Division 1 basketball have made multiple sweet 16 trips in the last 10 years. Izzo 5, Self 4, Calipari 3, Coach K 3, Bennett 3, Few 5, Drew 3, Sampson 4, Hamilton 4, Wright 4, Beard 3, Altman 3, Pearl 2, Painter 3, Cronin 2, Sean Miller 2, Barnes 2, McDermott 2, Holtmann 2, Fran 2.

I don't see anyone being announced until we lose in the Big Ten Tourney. We shouldn't make the NCAA tourney so we'll conclude our season after the conference.

Whether it's Brad or not. We're still weeks away from learning who the next coach is. We also must remember we haven't had a unique search like this since Kelvin Sampson was dismissed. We're in a unique situation and must consider this is not typical.

I haven’t seen anything pro-Cronin. I am not pro-Cronin. We need someone who would get us consistently back in the conversation, and he would do that. So if we got to him, I’d be okay with it.  Nobody is pining for Cronin.

IMO Dolson cannot take a risk of Archie 2.0, and if we get to tier 3, Cronin is a safe bet. I just don’t think many of the safe/sure bets are realistic. Beard isn’t getting considered. My personal favorite McCasland probably isn’t leaving Texas. Of the realistic close to sure things, I think it’s McDermott. All of this assuming Dusty wouldn’t leave UM of course.

Or it’s still Stevens and we are gonna be begging an apology from that new guy lol

And he’s 3 inches shorter than Archie.  That can’t be good.  lol.  :)

We are so back.  Lol.  Listen, you are going to get torn apart for this, but it is what it is.

This thread is going to be hell on earth tomorrow morning, and probably the next 2 weeks now.  Godspeed to you.

….this is going to go 2 ways.

1. Isaac is legit with creditable source and was/maybe “smokescreened”, himself, then told to reel it all in with the “Brad to IU” info.

2. Issac is a true troll and could care less what people think. Mission accomplished on his part, then he just deletes his acct.

I’m leaning heavily towards #1 strictly because of how strangely and quickly Goodman’s very vague statement shut things down.

As I have stated the tournament is a numbers game.  Need a coach you can get there consistently — basically every year, or 9 of 10 at least.  Then if he gets to the second weekend on a regular basis, you got your man.  It is a lot of “luck” to go from there.  More times you’re in, more likely to break thru.

Everyone’s allowed their opinion but this is the clear right answer, I think. It’s not the only goal, but at a place with top 5 or top 10 resources, this is not some insurmountable ask:

32 auto bids means 36 at-large spots. Given the strength of the conference, that means being basically a top 36 program even in a lesser year (injury-riddled, bad shooting luck for a chunk of the year, non-conference schedule falls flat, etc.).

Genuinely asking, how many coaches regularly make it past the S16? What do you consider regularly?

At the very least the new coach should be losing 0 games in Assembly Hall. Ridiculous.

And also stop having seasons with defeats in double digits.

Do people realize how long it's been since we finished a season with fewer than 10 losses?

In 2015-16, we were 27-8. Since then ...

2016-17: 18-16
2017-18: 16-15
2018-19: 19-16
2019-20: 20-12
2020-21: 12-15
2012-22: 21-14
2022-23: 23-12
2023-24: 19-14

In that span, Duke and Kansas have had a combined three seasons of 10 or more losses.

I will say, if it’s Brownell then that means IU is not serious about resurrecting its men’s basketball program. I’m going to choose to believe that’s false/fake. I can see him being on a list of a 4th or 5th tier of coaching candidates, but no logical way he’s higher than that. I would rather take an up and comer that Brownell.

Like I said, not gonna let that get me down, because I refuse to believe IU is that unserious about its program.

Agree with this take 100%. No reason to get an experienced coach if they have been mediocre. McCollum over Brownell everyday. I’d even take Pitino Jr over Brownell.

Our fan base is no different than any other. Yes we have a small group that are delusional and think Stevens will leave the Celtics front office to coach our train wreck but 95% plus know it’s not happening. You have that with every large program.

I’m a May fan, got into it with Tyme who was trying to say Woodson was a better coach which… yeah good call Tyme.

But top-20 is a REALLY high bar. May’s results so far have been great no doubt, but I think sustained excellence is required when you’re talking at that level.

Among the top 20 coaches with winning percentage, active, Id take May over Calipari, Pitino, Dixon, Matta, and Kelsey. Easily.

May has a top 25 offense last 3 years. Recruited a McDs AA this year, got transfer haul, and has a protected seed with many new pieces. And he’s only 48. What am I missing?

You hire a coach for their future, not their past, I’m with you
