I’m 47 (an old guy)and want the same thing however sometimes it doesn’t work like that.  If we skip steps and hire a shark and we are rolling awesome however if we have to settle for a coach like Cronin and I actually get to watch IU compete for the top of the B1G and actually participate in the tourney consistently then I won’t be mad at that either

I’m somehow in the middle here. Not really big on Cronin, for who he is generally, but he’s a solid coach that would likely have us competing in the top group of teams in conference and playing regularly in March, which means a chance. On the other hand, May, if possible, for me is a slam dunk, and despite Archie, I’m on the fence about whether an up and comer would be better for the program long term, assuming the “right” up and comer is picked, and that’s just as big a risk if not more than Cronin, so right back to where I started

I'm sorry. I have no interest in this.

That's great. We are Iowa/Minnesota now.

Minnesota has made the tournament 6 times this century. Iowa isn’t much better - 10 times this century. In what world is that comparable to Cronin?

It's alright. We don't actually need him to know what he'd say to anything, it's well known how he feels about things.

If it's not 1990 (or earlier) basketball it's inferior and he doesn't like it. Analytics are bad and are ruining college basketball. NIL and the transfer portal are bad. The B1G should still have only 10 teams and no conference tournament.

I’m almost 60.  If Michigan can go from 8-24 to a 4 seed in the tournament in one year, it’s not unreasonable to expect Indiana to skip steps as well.  I mean, guys my age especially lived what we’re capable of, and the fact that we’ve stayed around for 25-30 of mediocrity is pretty remarkable.  But I think it’s time for IU to stop taking that remarkable support for granted.

Same age, same thoughts. “Patience Grasshopper” is starting to sound like it’s for the young

There’s no way we pull Drew from Baylor IMO and I don’t see us hiring Beard. Of the “realistic” candidates there is a lot to like about Cronin. I would be pretty happy with the hire. He’s still 53, consistently in the tournament, and shown upside at UCLA recently. Give him our NIL and I think he has a very good run here. Biggest drawback is probably the contract buyout - I don’t put much stock in the idea of there being a “loophole” that would make it $0 which I’ve seen in a few outlets. It’s not my money so if our better candidates say no thanks I have no problem with them spending what it takes to become a top half of the B10 team again that has a chance in March more often than not. That definitely looks different to different people but that’s what Mick Cronin looks like to me. Lol. Guess I’ll be president of his fan club. And his grumpy demeanor is just an added bonus for me.

I think he might be one of those candidates that doesn’t get talked about much however when it gets closer to March out of now where you hear a lot of smoke about.   I think he is the sleeper one that might be higher then some think

Who has a better resume?

I'm 34-- so I don't remember Baylor before Drew (basically)... he made Baylor a flat out power. When you look at his record at Baylor past those first three years... mercy. He makes 5.3 million a year now.... can we pay 7/7.5?

Past those two...we agree on McDermott and I think kids in this state would flock to him to play in that offense.

I dont really see IU going after Cronin.

His buyout is a definite negative, and I would hope that he is far enough down the list that it wouldn't get to him. I'm not that opposed to him as a coach here, for the record, anybody would be better than woody.

I just can't imagine that is a name that donors will pony up for

If Indiana wants to get back to the middle of the pack, or slightly ahead, how bout Fran McCaffery? He’s run his course in Iowa. His kids live in Indiana now.

Then Iowa can have McCollum

Probably the single most greatest program  building  job of any coach.  He took over a program that they involved a murder of a player.   Look it up.   Insane job building Baylor into what they are today

It has been reported he holds the IU job in a higher position then those 2 but who knows

Interesting. He has a personal connection to the state of IN of course, and IU is clearly a better job than UL.

But…UK…hard to make the case it’s a worse job than IU, unless (like Drew) you have some special personal preference

Two thoughts on that 1) The Drews are comfortable in Waco by all accounts and enjoy practicing their faith there. They didn’t bite on the UK offer and I’m sure he’s had other chances over the years. Perhaps he covets the IU job enough to go at this stage in his career, but I just don’t see it. Definitely call him, sure. 2) It ain’t the UCLA of old

If we could realistically get the top coach in the sport, which Id argue is Nate Oats, then yeah we’d all want that.

I think what you’re seeing is that some of us realize many of these coaches won’t be realistic for us. Example: we’d be happy with Beard but he’s controversial and apparently our current admin wouldn’t even consider him. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong but when you’re looking at the top of the sport, who is actually  realistic hire that puts us in that top 6-7 you mention?

I’m not sure who is realistic.  I don’t have that kind of info.  I mean, Stevens and May would be home runs to me.  Oats, I’d take a big swing at him after that.  Drew.  I’d love Beard if he didn’t have the baggage.  I’m not sure who would excite me a whole lot after that.  I think if you’re going to reach down for a mid major coach, you better absolutely do all your homework as to everything about his approach and absolutely not screw it up this time.
