If Dolson has his guy then this is all that has to be done: https://x.com/jeffborzello/status/1897414982004040044?s=19

I mean, unless it's a current sitting coach...but if it's not then just announce it..

It is a sitting coach.  It's Armond Hill.  Who sits more than Armond?

I truly trust Chris and the information he brings...and Chris has even said that Brad Stevens is unlikely to be the next coach at IU...and this is no way a knock on Chris...

What sticks with me though is that Stevens apparently did give us a look last time...and Dolson has created a friendship of sorts with Stevens, or at least been communicating with him...

From that you would think Dolson would be able to gauge Steven's interest now...and by some accounts he's not interested...

Then why was Woodson's "retirement " announced when it was...I don't think it happens mid-season unless Dolson felt strongly in a certain candidate...especially with the chance for the team to still make the tournament...

So either he wanted to get ahead of things for May...but it appears to have fallen through...or he feels confident in someone like Stevens...

Regardless we're going to end up with an upgrade over Woodson...

Just a guess and not based on anything but Woodson’s “retirement” could very well have been done to stave of an ugly environment at assembly Hall. Now, that would assume that the decision was made that Woodson was gone at the end of the year. As for Stevens, I think Dolson has likely known for quite some time if he is an option. I don’t think Woodson’s retirement has to mean that Dolson has his guy, though.

Interesting story on McCasland: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6172277/2025/03/05/texas-tech-grant-mccasland-jeff-linder/

Like Painter, he hired a coach as an offensive coordinator, which explains their scoring surge this year.

This is also relevant: “Linder had been a Division I head coach for the last eight seasons — the most recent four at Wyoming, where in 2022 he took the Cowboys to just their third NCAA Tournament in the last four decades — but he wasn’t sure he had the resources to win consistently in the name, image and likeness era. So he joined a program that has become one of the Big 12’s top spenders on basketball, with the largest 2024 operating budget of any current league member, according to statistics from the Department of Education.”

Can I try that one?

My current list of legitimate candidates:

  • Drew
  • Otz
  • Collins
  • Schertz
  • McCasland
  • Cronin
  • Huss
  • McCollum
  • McDermott
  • Brownell

I'm willing to state that I think it is likely we will have one of those ten guys as the next coach at IU. Based on what I have heard (including things not on the open board) and in no particular order, that's my list.

Are Schertz and Huss truly options? I’d love Schertz if we can’t get our top choice. Don’t know much about Huss.

For anyone who's wondering, Rabby still has no idea. Just says everyone is saying something different.

This is fascinating. I really don’t know if I buy that Dolson is just floating out names to keep people off the scent but I think he is putting on a masterclass on a very controlled and “no outside noise” search.

Other than our football search, anyone else know of a process like this where there was no concrete evidence getting out for several weeks of the process?

Because the fan base was about to go nuclear.  Had nothing to do with having a coach locked up.

Could be...but I don't think that's totally it...I think Dolson wanted to get it out as soon as possible that we have a vacancy...

Personally, I think there were a few of reasons for the timing.

  • The fanbase was getting restless. Woodson had lost 6 of 7, some close, some blowouts (Illinois). Boos were raining down at SSAH.
  • Dusty was still considered a real possibility to replace Woodson, and he was bringing his Michigan team to SSAH. Dolson was trying to head off the real possibility of a toxic situation.
  • Woodson went to Dolson wanting to be assured that he was coming back next year. When Dolson told him that he was done here, Woodson melted down, and started the spin machine.

The word on the street is that Dolson would have preferred to handle the whole thing after the season, but the events described above started to unfold and forced his hand.

If we're not going to hire Will Wade, Mick Cronin is without a doubt my #1. You aren't going to get another candidate with the qualifications of Cronin to come take this job. I've been pushing Cronin...on this thread...for nearly a month.

If Otzelberger or Drew have a change of heart and want a change of scenery, I'd be thrilled. Will root for either to happen but not holding my breath.

But if you end up hiring Brownell, McCollum, etc....we'll be doing this in 4 years again.

Yikes

It was announced mid-season so some lunatic didn’t blow up Assembly Hall with some 18k people in it.

But in all seriousness, this is what the IU administration does. They were not ever going to “fire” and remove one of the better players to put on an IU uniform in the middle of the season.

Has the bolded been heard from anyone not named KathywithaC? I don't trust that poster since he/she sometimes displays very trollish tendencies.
