Good offense doesn’t always mean flashy offense. 
 

FWIW, Synergy Sports, which quantifies efficiency in college basketball across all levels, had his 2019-20 NW Missouri State team at the highest offensive efficiency (114.6) in the 16 years of Synergy’s database. For comparison, the best Division I offense during that time was Villanova’s 2017-18 national championship team that posted a 110.0 efficiency.

I’m obviously high on the guy regardless, but his teams play very smart basketball. I would imagine that with a more talented roster he won’t have to kill time through offensive possessions the way he is at Drake with a D2 starting lineup.

Also, he better hope that anyone vetting him doesn't talk to his ex-girlfriends and their family and friends. The chances the first time he ever hit a women he ended up biting and strangling her, hurting her enough that he got felony charges are slim to none. 

I’m a teacher and coach- former student and player goes to Ole Miss of all places. He reached out this week to ask me if I thought IU would go for Beard. He said several things  but a couple of interest:

1. Well known there that Beard is/has been interested in IU.

2. He still has an alcohol problem. Students see him hammered out and about regularly in Oxford.

True, but the reason no one saw him coming was because his program was on probation for his conduct. If he’d been better at breaking rules he would have absolutely been on the radar.

And while I know it’s third hand… there you have it. And if message board posters can get the skinny, you can be certain an IU search firm will get the scoop.

I think that Beard is a very unlikely choice.

There are plenty of excellent options; to take Beard or an untested in D1 guy like McCollum would be a bit crazy IMO.

Deliberate is a fun way of saying “slowest pace in the country”. No thanks. We watch basketball to be entertained and holding the ball for what feels like an eternity each possession isn’t fun to watch

About Ben McCollum, I listened to Kent Sterling recently and he mentioned about McCollum and his offensive style being painfully slow...similar to Tony Bennett level of pace. If he comes in and we win and find ourselves as a perennial top 15 school and advanced in the tournament we would not care, initially.  If we don’t win a championship and see few final 4’s, then we might start to think that style is why we haven’t won a championship. But, if we he was delivering like the AZ Miller did with elite 8’s/sweet 16’s regularly over the next 5 years we would not worry about style

Have you watched Drake this year? They are not holding the ball for an eternity each possession. They are passing and cutting working for the best shot.

Play style? Don't care.

But people are trashing a guy like Cronin who has nine 25+ win seasons.

McCollum hasn’t coached 25 games in D1.

Dolson had chance 4 years ago to hire Beard with his connections to Knight and it didn’t happen.   When posters were ticked he wasn’t showing up on hot boards insiders said at the time he had too many skeletons in the closest to ever be hired by certain programs and IU was one of those programs.    Beard doesn’t get hired and ends up getting hired by Texas where he proceeds to have an incident and they fire him.  IU passed on him before this last incident.   Fast forward to this year and IU insiders actually put him high on a hot board however continue to say that he has a really steep climb to get hired.   The guy can coach basketball no question about it however I doubt that will be in Bloomington.   Probably in the SEC

I have watched them a lot because I have been interested in seeing his style and whether I would want him to coach at IU. They pass up fast breaks and open shots over and over and over. It’s brutal to watch

Agree.  I like the way they play. It’s much better than watching some of those mid-2010’s Tony Bennett teams.
