General Coach Candidate News

I would counter that, being 63 only matters if he is good, and if so, I take 10 years of a good coach at IU any day of the week. Beyond J Howard, what successful coach right now recruits, at all, by his player past? And other than a few pie in the sky candidates, translation to the current NCAA athlete is a complete unknown.

Recruiting is his biggest unknown and 2 time NBA HC and 25 yrs of NBA coaching is never a negative and a recruits biggest advisers, mom and dad likely do know who Woodson is.

If you are waiting on Stevens, Few, Bennett,Beard, you are likely going to be standing at the alter alone for a very long time.

I never said I was waiting on any of them. Do I think any of them are a better hire then Mike Woodson. Yes. If it takes him 3 years to right the ship he does not right the ship until he is 66. So at that point you might get 2 years from him you might get 7 who knows what you are going to get at that age. Then we are right back here to doing this again. Can his health hold up to the recruiting grind? A recruits mom and dad if in there 40's or 50's was at best a teenager when he was in the NBA. So I would not take it as a granted that they know who he is.

If you can explain what the heck that means you are a savant.

Do we want a guy who had a winning percentage of 43% in his first three years as a power five coach? Heck no!, because "a percentage is a percentage." lol  (Coach K)

Well to be fair, that was on the college level, which Woodson has never coached on. I should note Coach K was probably pretty young when he took that job correct? After leaving IU under Bob Knight of course if I remember correctly.

Woodson is an old fart. It looks like he got his first NBA head job at 43? Okay that's pretty good solid for the NBA even back in 2004.

I think the majority of folks who are supportive of Woodson and maybe even IU players in general are old enough to remember them playing. That's fine and all but I really don't think there's a single Indiana "guy" who has the resume to take over the program today and win. The closes person would be Steve Alford.

If we're hiring Steve Alford to bring a 6th banner here then Indiana as indeed fallen off.

Mike Woodson doesn't have a resume. He has a connection to Indiana, that's sadly it.

There has been so much chatter about so many potential coaches... who remembers what "the first story" on any one (except BS) was? Can you refresh an old guy's memory? Please and thanks.

Surely you aren't confirming the agreement and failed physical, are you? (And I won't call your "Shirley" again) :D

apparently, I missed the "shirley" exchange, but that is one of my favorite movie lines ever.. I love literal humor!!

Answered above, was his job but didn't pass the physical

If we did indeed offer it to Matta, we're far down on the list I assume.

Thad is mostly around 4-7 on here. If it indeed true, then Beard, Drew, Mussleman have turned Indiana down.

If all this is true, then we're hiring an Indiana guy.

I'm going to throw up.

Oh please, a percentage is a percentage.

His name is constantly brought up in the NBA head coaching searches but he can never land a job. There has to be a reason for that and I truly believe it's because he hasn't impressed as a HEAD coach. Current NBA teams are not hiring him to be the head coach and yet Indiana should hire him because he played at Indiana? He barely won with the best players in the world and now we're expecting him to win with generally worse players? YIKES!

His resume doesn't stick out at all.

Tom Allen is 24-25 as a HC, he can't even produce a winning percentage with the top 5% of high school football players in the world and has never won a B1G championship or a bowl game, why did he get an extension?

His resume doesn't stick out at all.

Hey look, I can do it too!!

Trust Scott Dolson.

To be completely fair, Indiana Football is not Indiana Basketball.

Expecting Indiana Football to hire a banner winner is unrealistic, especially a few years ago.

Sorry, "a percentage is a percentage." Also, Tom Allen doesn't even have a winning record as a coach in the playoffs.

I think we skipped all of them. My understanding was Woodson always thought he was #2 after Brad but was really disappointed when he learned that we were going with Matta 2nd. I'm just getting part of the story and sharing what I was told. So there is half I'm missing

If this is true it makes me want Woody.  This would make it seem like he really wants this job while others might have to be talked into it or just want a pay raise.  I want a guy who really wants the job, who will pour everything into it.  Bring on Coach Woodson

Yes he was at Cook a few years ago with Bill and Wayne Radford wanting them to push for him to get the job. It does seem he would walk over broken glass for it.

Honestly, he has the potential to be a great recruiter at Indiana. From the state, desire for the position, NBA experience as a player and coach, NBA playoff experience as a coach.  That is a fantastic place to start in terms of a recruiter profile. He actually did better at his NBA stops than the coaches before him. Which says he can coach even a poor roster.

As far as the Indiana former players, he is my clear cut #1 option. And I think he would be successful. I’m totally open to him being the next coach.

Honestly at this point I’ve talked myself into Woodson so if our alternatives are assistant coaches right now **** it just let Woodson have it

Do you know why we skipped them? I would be incredibly disappointed in Dolson if he didn’t do everything he could to land one of them.

Is Scott old enough to retire? He might want to look into options when this blows up in four years.
