Using Torvik, two top 40 offenses at Drake. Two top 40 defenses (top 10 this year at WVU and one at Drake).

Teams are pretty good at shooting and avoiding TOs. Very good at defensive rebounding, looks like he typically eschews the offensive glass. Has twice had top 30 eFG% defenses. 

Four of his six Drake teams were top 50 in FT%.

They’re gonna shoot lots of 3s, thank God (44th in 3P rate this year, and recent DDV teams have shot 39% or more of field goals from deep).

I will casually observe what transpires and maybe change my mind, but until we look like a tough team to beat and actually fight at the top of the BT, I'm not going to be invested.

I hoped this hire would do that.  It hasn't.

Then no realistic hire would excite you.

I’m so thrilled with this. He’s set up to succeed immediately with talent he can bring over, but it just feels good to have an actual CBB coach again. Someone who loves this sport like we all do.

Trading one coach who didn't make the tournament for another who didn't make the tournament. Hate the hire, but have no choice but to support the guy I guess. Hopefully he can turn the program around, and quickly.

Compare this to the pope and kelsey hires from last year and it feels similar. Devries probably has had more success than Kelsey and maybe less than Pope by a smidge. It's hard to pull successful coaches away from their teams. That is just the nature of college basketball. I would love to have gotten Lloyd or Drew or someone of that nature but it just isn't the name of the game anymore. I would wager to guess the people that thought we had no shot at Stevens will be lauding this as a great hire

Well, not the hire I was looking for, but I can get more enthusiastic about this one than many of the names that were thrown about.

if it's DeVries, I implore you all to give him a chance before jumping to conclusions. let's see his product on the floor and what he can do in year 1, i think he will surprise the doubters but that's just my opinion. 

i will be celebrating with some very old, very expensive bourbon. i feel like for the first time in years, we have a legit coach who understands the current landscape of CBB

Devries is not the grand slam  hire we were wishing but he is a solid coach and I will support him. I also have faith that he will put together a tremendous team next year and have us contending again...oh, and did I mention his son is a Stud!! He would've won well over 20 games this past season if his best players didn't miss substantial time. He still turned WVU around substantially -- they only won 9 games the year before. He also did it with less resources than Indiana...Oh and he beat teams like Gonzaga, Kansas and Arizona (who embarrassed us).

I'm excited to see what he can do.  If Indiana isn't willing to go after anyone with baggage (which admittedly, I wish they would), then this is, in my opinion, about the best hire we can make outside of Brad...Jay Wright was never happening.  I think DeVries will do a very good job. We will build a team around an All Conference type player in Tucker Devries.

I am guessing that Drake doesn't have our NIL money, and always had to be an 11, 12, or 13 seed?

He has proven he can coach, and his teams have always been good 3-point shooters.

Comparing Woody and DDV in ANY WAY to eachother says everything about your basketball opinions.

Can we finally admit that Dolson didn't have a coach locked up for weeks and weeks? It seems that he had requirements for a coach and used a search firm to help him identify candidates, just like other teams do. 

It sounds like Devries met with IU and also met with Iowa recently. It sounds like Dolson "retired" Woody w/o having a coach in his back-pocket. 

No smoke screens. SImple explanation. Occam's razor.

If DeVries is the hire, that makes me think one of two things: 1) Dolson never actually had his guy, like we were led to believe, or 2) He had his guy, but that guy bailed on him, he had to scramble and this is who he got instead. 

 

Would love to be wrong, but that's my gut feeling.

One request: Can we go with DDV or anything besides DD? I feel if we use DD too often, you know who will pop up like Beetle Juice.
