I’m still kind of in disbelief that after waiting out the Archie and then Woody years were going into another tournament with IU. I think I’ve changed my mind on the post season. These guys are all being paid. They should drag their sorry butts to whatever Crown or NIT tournament that will have them and try and win something. They could all use the practice, coaches included.

Portal season

This is an area you'd hope Carr should be a real asset. Not just getting a head start on portal recruiting, but as part of that managing whether we keep guys like Dorn and Miles for example. It's now not just whether they can help, but it's also whether we overpaid for them last year. Analyzing what's on the market and what it's costing. You of course want some roster continuity, but if we overpaid (just for discussion, not saying we did) role players last year, then maybe you let some of them walk because you can get better role players this year for less. It's essentially cap management at the college level.

Reading between the lines, some discussions with players agents has been ongoing. We likely know a few options already. If Flory is one, to me, is highly unlikely. But like Dolson has said, if you are starting when the portal opens you are too late and behind. I don’t give a damn about depth 11-13. I care about 1-10. And hopefully that will reflect in what we try to build.

Watched this game this morning. Best all around game Karvala’s played this year that I’ve seen. Also had a couple of blocks and steals and was really active and engaged on both ends. Nice little thing to see: He’s not the most physical kid, but he got banged around a lot and just played though it pretty unaffected. Will play in the championship game at noon eastern time against what certainly looks at the moment like AZ Compass. Side note and completely evidence-free speculation: The best player in this game for Spire imo was pretty clearly ‘26 wing Aiden Derkack. Had a nice game and competed his a$$ off even when it started to get away from them. Currently a Providence commit and had an IU offer from the current staff. Depending what happens with the HC situation at Providence that situation could possibly come back around.

I've definitely become a believer in the strategy of paying big for 2 players, then just let the chips fall where they may with the rest of the roster. A rising tide lifts all boats. I still trust Devries' ability to coach up the players who aren't your top level types, and that he would figure out a way to max out everyone's talents. Problem this year is we didn't have any top level players. Wilkerson maybe.

The hope is that with three incoming freshman + retention of 3-4 current players there’s more money to spread out between less players. We were paying close to or more than 7 figures for our 6th and 7th players last year.

They're #38 in the WAB as of this morning. There are 37 at-large teams, but there will also be 5 to 7 automatic qualifiers ranked above #38 the WAB, so they will need to go down to the mid-40s WAB teams for at-large selections. For as much as they've talked up the WAB metric this year, it would be a pretty bad look to bypass Miami at #38 and go all the way down to the #45 or #46 teams for selection of at-large teams.

Curious if VCU and SDSU are already locked in or if they still have to play their way in. If either or both are part of the 36 locks, it adds another spot or two for those stuck in the bubble from hell.

Then they got a Nebraska team who peaked early in the season and hasn't been all that impressive down the stretch. Those twits could score 250 points in a game and I would double down on not handing them any short term credit. I'm not biased at all...

For sure. I'm really disappointed looking back on year 1 now that it's done. The roster was not good, but the fact they beat Wisconsin, UCLA, and Purdue shows they had the ability to win more games. Just didn't. Weren't prepared, weren't put in position to succeed. All I can do is hope for a better year 2.

And some are eager beavers to criticize solely because they make more money than fans. At the end of the day they're young men. Also known as "college kids" ... legal adults, still rounding into adulthood in a university setting. Booing isn't the worst thing ever, it's not helpful either. Makes a bad situation worse. But whatever helps people blow off steam, I guess. Venting on a message board is fair game IMO but it's also fair to point out when it's over the top IMO. My frustration would be way more directed at DDV than the players.

Kansas has plenty of money. And Self can coach. But he’s really struggling (relatively speaking) to adjust to the NIL era. Lots of poor fits he hasn’t been able to coach up. Annoying center from UM, Storr, and the malcontent superstar frosh, etc… What Dusty and Underwood are doing goes way beyond money. Guys like Mara, Cadeau, and Johnson weren’t exactly portal darlings. They’re nice players who Michigan is getting more out of than their last coaches did. Perfect example of “fit.” Self has been the opposite—every year he has a malcontent or high priced guy producing less than at his last stop. That’s what Carr has to help with. And quite frankly Devries needs to be able to do when they get here. The roster this year wasn’t as bad as our record but most of the pieces didn’t fit together and I don’t particularly think the coaching really took for some of them either.

NBA does it because that’s how their contracts/cba is structured. But it’s structured that way because that’s kind of how it was historically shaking out under a salary cap. We’re not going to be as limited as NBA team in terms of salary, structurally speaking, but we’re going to be limited by who is in the portal and available. By most reports we’d be able to fit 3 bigger names and then spread the leftover really thin over the rest of the guys. The way you do it doesn’t matter as much as fit and getting the “bang for your buck.” Paying money to guys who can’t meaningfully contribute is what sunk this last team.
