IU vs ND post-game thread

Recommended Posts

So where do I go with this one..

It's already been said but Rob Johnson is our man. While the majority of the starting five have their tampons hung sideways, Rojo just stays quiet and produces.

Thomas Bryant... Was so mad he was literally crying after that blowup. I would too playing with these soft batches..

Im going to catch flack for this but I think what is wrong with this team is Williams/Blackmon/possibly Yogi. Much like Purdue, we may do better with less. Not saying these guys are not super producers. Just that this team will NEVER come together for REAL until this little combo is broken up. I guess what I'm saying is we have a little princess-superstar-ego mutiny on our hands with these 3. Mods, feel free to correct me I that seems like a shot at the players.

And Crean, 2 things:
1) make this team feed Bryant almost every possession for a high % shot, foul or kick out
2) you need to give this 1-3-1 thing a serious shot because it was active and wrecked ND. Brey must have never had his guys practice against a 1-3-1 because they definitely looked uncertain out there the last few mins.

Im also sick of watching other pg's steal the show from yogi. Maybe I've been blind. Maybe yogi isn't anywhere close to the nations top pg. If he was, he would be the general of the team and win the big games like elite pg's do. Im just frustrated with him right now I suppose.

Great comeback win. Wish we played better overall, but sometimes a win like that can bring guys together.

If this was my team for the foreseeable future my lineup is this:

Yogi
RoJo
Hartman
Williams
Bryant

Bench:
Zeisloft
Beifeldt
OG
Morgan (if healthy)

Yogi and Williams are on short leashes. I'm telling Troy that if he plays like he did in the first half today he'll be on the bench. I'm telling Yogi that this is his last chance to step up as a leader on both ends, and it's time to start feeding the big fella. I'm telling RoJo this is his team now. He's my guy, from a leadership standpoint, for the next 2.5 years. This is his team.

I'm telling JBJ that we'll entertain the idea of him playing again when he decides he actually wants to be on a winning basketball team. He can play again when he stops being selfish on both ends, and starts putting more on the table than he takes off it.

Great fight out of the team in the second half of the second half.  Still baffled by the TOs from Troy and Yogi, 9 combined...  We won't win many games against decent teams if they're turning it over like that.  They were on from deep (50%) but terrible inside the arc.  The FT rate and % were both decent.  This season is going to hinge on defense and TOs.

Wrong thread but watching this PU vs Butler game in person is a thing of beauty. Mainly for how hard the PU fans are taking this but this Butler squad is very well coached in all facets of the game.

Butler is a perfect illustration of why Tom Crean doesn't need to do anything but go get smart basketball players who can play as a unit and improve as a coach so he can game plan and execute like Holtmann has Butler executing.  Same as Stevens did.  Culture.

He doesn't need to worry about "stars" or ratings.   He doesn't need to recruit kids with ball skills.  And he doesn't need to recruit kids with an agenda.  Butler has won for years because they've been generally efficient on the offensive end, and their coaches have been brilliant on the defensive end.  They're smart, they play well together, and not one of their players was a McD's All American or will be an NBA player.  They're just tough, smart, committed to defense, and unselfish.   Maybe Chris Holtmann just made the list?  He may not be Brad Stevens, but he coaches like him.  Butler plays the way I love watching basketball, and they're (today) a far better team than Purdue, who is the more talented group by far.

Tyler Lewis was a McD AA I believe and Dunham could be an NBA player. But yes, in general, your point is correct. Non selfish, smart players are essential.

If it was me i'd put yogi at the 2 and rojo at the point. I feel like its more of yogs natural position. And run the offense through the high post. James would be a great 6th man to provide a spark. I know this is a pipe dream but im 2 bourbon barrel stouts in and im dreaming.

To me it appears that we might be differentiating ourselves in the conditioning department. In this game in the last 10 minutes on both O and D our guys looked liked thoroughbreds on the loose. I realize that mo was in our favor and adrenalin had kicked in; TB may have been the exception as he hasn't learned to manage his hi energy output yet.

I'm sure they're quiet now, really nothing they can say after falling to 0-5 all-time in this tournament.

Nah they were talking trash as they were leaving with 4 min left about Wake Forest.

Maybe the most frustrating wins of all time. I was screaming and cussing the whole game... Usually that's reserved for losses... RoJo is great, Hartman & NZ3 are our next best defenders and have the most heart... Troy is up and down... Yogi should have been benched in this game, JBJ didn't play well... As DD stated be couldn't guard a chair, and he is still all about JBJ over the team. Max is better for this team than Bryant... The team ruining through the post is much smoother than our one on one run and gun crap of an offense...

I made a change to your post.  Please don't make it personal towards a player like that anymore.

Just got home from the game and I gotta say, this was one of the best days of my college basketball watching career. Got to see iu go on that 40-17 run at the end of the game to come back and steal the win and got to see purdue lose in another great game! Duke and kentucky also lost so I couldn't be happier. I've been a huge anti-crean guy but I got to give it to him that 1-3-1 or whatever it was defense worked glad to see that the team never gave up and fought back in it.

Had to leave a little after the second  half started and was disgusted.  In the car Bleacher Report posted a final score that had it flipped and said N.D. won!  If I wouldn't have looked at the box and the article with it,  I wouldn't have watched the game when I got home. Pleasantly surprised!   Not pretty, but a win.

Late to the party--but my thoughts after watching the game were:

Folks--I think Hartman has finally shook the rust off. He looks like the Hartman of old and we are a different team when he brings that tough-smart play--along with his hustle and good shooting.  Glue Guy!

I think TB is figuring out he can play with anybody. This game has got to be a confidence booster for him. Now--if we can get the team to keep feeding him in the post we will have something.

RoJo --owned the first half.  He was the only reason we were not down 20 and out of the game by halftime.  He showed toughness on defense throughout.

Troy--owned the second half with his intensity and determination.  He played smarter and made big play after big play. He almost willed us to the win

Coach crean deserves some credit because he finally made a defensive adjustment that worked--the 1-3-1 zone was effective.

OG is going to help us.  He has a Big 10 body and is not afraid to play defense and mix it up offensively.

Max had some good play and got a few cheap calls as well.

Yogi and JBJ were underwhelming today.  I hope JBJ watches a replay of the game and hears Dakich say JBJ couldn't guard a chair.  I say that not to be mean but he needs to know what we all see and get motivated and start showing us that he CAN play D.

This team has so much potential.  Just play average D and we could go deep in the tourney.
