Transfer Portal w IU Interest

Goodness this thread got rowdy last night lol

It's not about winning the press conference. Making big splashy portal signings is exciting, but look what happened this past year. The college basketball season isn't even OVER yet, and there's still almost 3 weeks left for guys to ENTER the portal.

Would I have liked to land Conwell and/or Dix? Absolutely. But they went where they went for personal reasons not directly related to Indiana basketball. Missing on those guys seems like it was an inevitability, regardless of who's the coach or how toxic the fanbase (allegedly) is.

Myles Rice committed to IU on April 13th of last year. Ballo on April 16th, and Carlyle on the 20th. And that was with a coach who had been here 4 years and had a staff going back many years with several connections to those players. They came to play for "terrible" fans and a terrible coach for less NIL money than we have now.

We have a long way to go before we can make any judgments on how DeVries is attacking the portal this season. I'm not going to say "chill," because I'm anxious about all this too. But we definitely need to let it breathe. Things are going to start happening pretty quickly, especially once the full staff is announced.

Yes and what killer seasons they all went on to have …….. yes a lot of time left but also multiple guys turning down almost 2 million and our best player is still the coach’s son we have 10 + spots to fill on the roster and we’ve formally announced 1 assistant . It more than reasonable to have some concerns.

Once we fill out our roster the coach’s son will probably still be the best player on our roster.

I don’t see anyone actually worrying that we will fail to get ten D1 scholarship players.

What I am looking forward to is a coach that can turn those players into a cohesive team, regardless of the hype surrounding the roster.

Same. People are still stuck in the cycle of thinking our only hope is getting tip top talent on the hook. We will have a coach and staff that can actually develop a range of players.

I hate to bring it up, but looking back,….Woodson was sort of “Killing It” last year during IU’s recruitment. Mainly because there was NO WAY any of those player would have come to IU last year without bags of money. They were only here for the money, NOT IU.
On paper they were supposed to restore IU to national prominence and potentially save his job.
The big problem was Woodson was never going to “save his job” because he was such an awful coach.
….combine that with overpriced, selfish players,…. well you know the rest.

IMO, Coach DeVries spoke to every single player and came away with a resounding group of selfish, lazy, NIL hungry players. Good riddance!

I could care less if Coach DeVries landed a whole team of D1 and D2 stars. All those Drake coaches have really prospered developing some of them into successful and sought after D1 players.

I mean that is all well and good, but at a certain point the Jims and Joes matter too.  That was part of what lead to the downturn at the end of Knight's career too.  Yeah, his worst was as good as some other guy's best in that he was still delivering about 19-22 wins a year and making the tournament, but running out Larry Richardson, William Gladness, Lynn Washington, etc. in the middle to late 90's was definitely an anchor on the program.

I want a well oiled team but I also want a talented team.  The two don't have to be mutually exclusive.  Running out a D2 All Star team every year that wins 20 games isn't going to be enough long term.

He has a chance to fill out his team and he will get a little latitude since the decision was made that not one Woodson guy was apparently good enough to stay around, but if the past week ends up being the norm, then we aren't a program that is attempting to win a title.  Hopefully some things start shaking out here quickly.

Haven’t posted really since the announcement, but while I get people are upset with some of the recruiting recently, I feel we need to be really patient. IU has struggled for the last 8-9 years, and while the portal can have quick fixes, I honestly don’t think it’s a do or die situation if we make the tournament in CDD’s first year. It would be nice, but I want CDD to build this program to his standards, because he has shown to be successful in doing so.

As we’ve seen the last couple of years, just getting the “top” portal players means nothing! CDD needs to build his culture, and I’m perfectly fine if it takes a year or two. I’m not being complacent, I just want this program to be set up for sustained success. If CDD feels the portal doesn’t yield that and brings in a good high school recruiting class, I’m all for that!

Let things play out because I think we are going to be very happy with Coach!

I think we will make the tournament easily this year. No bubble, no play in game. Easily.

The reality is there are two types of schools right now: the ones trying to spend money before April 7 and the ones waiting until after April 7 to spend money.

I wouldn't worry too much about transfer portal for another week or two. I understand and agree that it would be great to already have a team together. But it's an odd year.

I've seen many references to April 7... what is so magical about that date?

I agree and I am okay with this. Goodman said something the other night on F68 that I don't agree with. Said if Tucker is your 1st/2nd guy your team probably won't be good. Said if he's your 3rd/4th option, you can have a stacked team. Does he not realize Tucker was in the discussion for All-American at Drake? He probably makes it this year if he 's healthy.

Best post I've seen about this. I think you are right. Let's see how things stand around April 21st.

You’re completely ignoring the point I’m making but go off king
