Simple question....if we had landed an Anthony Walker level player who was a shooting guard instead of a post, would IU have made the tournament?  I know it's kind of moot because we could have had both given that there was an open scholly, but even given the troubles we had that the difference between IU at least making the tournament and being where we are now was having an okay backup guard to come in as a starter when X went down as opposed to Cupps moving into the lineup and a combination of Gunn and Leal coming off the bench.

For reference, this is the most comparable player I see to the level that Anthony Walker was as a transfer (he was the 52nd rated PF transfer, played at a power 5 school where he was a starter in his career when Miami was struggled and then played a backup role later):

Julian Roper.  Transferred from Northwestern to Notre Dame.  Not a great player.  Plays decent defense, okay shooter -- had a great shooting year the year before transferring, came back down this year.  Good rebounder for a guard.  Not all world or anything, but I think a player like him was more needed to getting two bigs in the portal.

Does this mystery player (not Julian) shoot like Walker.  :)

I have been on the record "defending" the open scholarship saying "who would we have gotten that would have made a difference."  My basic premise was that the Power5 level guards turned us down.   Didn't think we needed another Middle School Bob situation.  I really don't think having a "mid level" player just to fill a scholarship is worth it.  If he was a specialist coming off the bench -- shut down defender, 3 point ace -- then I could see it.  I am also heavily relying on staff to be able to evaluate the current roster and their improvement -- lesson learned.  That the open spot made a difference shows how flawed the roster really was.

I'll drop this here, because I think we talked about replacement earlier.  Heard Bruce Pearl on the radio today.  Political show -- but they sandwiched some basketball around it.  Seems like a good guy.  Articulate while being a "man of the people" so to speak.  Interesting info on transfer portal and NIL and the need for some control and rules.  Sounds like he's looking to smoke the people in the tourney.

I’m thinking the Woodson was only focused on the higher level rated portal players.  I don’t know what the ratings were, but why didn’t we look at mid level players. What was Lance Jones rated, why didn’t we even look at him?

Woody doesn’t care enough to dig in and identify diamonds in the rough. Takes too much effort. Look at his high school recruiting. He just goes after the same top players as everyone else (and then goes 0-31).

Chris is still here, he’s just as disappointed as I am with the new last week of Woodson staying. Unfortunately there won’t be any news anytime soon. If Indiana loses first round then maybe this thread gets hot again.

But it’s portal season and off-season. It will get quite around here before you know it.

Oh better believe this place will be lit for portal season! It's our only chance. Unless Woodson really thinks we're really riding trey and leal to a final four!

Yea considering that dude ran off our only consistent source of information out of sheer frustration, I imagine it will slow down unless Chris007 decides to reengage. Which I hope he does, but understand why he wouldn’t bother. He doesn’t gain anything by sharing info he gets, he’s just being kind to a bunch of desperate internet friends and fellow IUBB fanatics.

Chris isn’t going to have one person ruffle his feathers and run him off. He’s probably just started making some BLT’s and realized he was out of mayo and had to run to the store to get some to finish his sandwich.

I have said it was the roster for months now and no matter the reason that was Woody’s fault. Have only argued for real reasons and jot fake rumors getting tossed skeins. Argued they were stuck playing a certain way with only Cupps etc.

That exact statement about Cupps being as good as Yogi was made on here with people trying to use facts to prove why we didn’t need another PG. multiple agreed. It is all in the portal thread. Can tell you who made the statement, who backed them up etc. the consensus was we had too many guards. Not kidding. Go look.

Now everyone KNOWS Wodoy isn’t the answer and upset they pushed back on guys spreading rumors, gave up on then, told them all to transfers etc.

You aren’t wrong about some of the takes that were made this time last year. There were a lot of people arguing that X, Cupps and if needed Galloway were all we needed at point and that Galloway and Gunn were all we needed at the 2.

people also had some ridiculous takes on how good CJ Gunn was going to be etc.

that is how far we have fallen in one year. That blind faith and optimism that Woody expects fans to have was killed by him and this team.

If Galloway is hurt like rumored to be, we won’t make it past the first game

Even with him, it could be a challenge and they could possibly win that. But the deeper that you go it is going to get harder and harder and, as I said before, I don’t see anything in our play from these last four games that gives any kind of assurance we can win this tournament which is what we need to do to get in the big dance

Can’t believe this thread is still alive. Why are you guys doing this to yourselves? Did you not hear that smug ******* on Sunday? He’s the coach of Indiana Basketball, and he’s not going anywhere. He stood up there and punked every fan, all of us, to our faces, and made it clear we aren’t ****. He and his old Partner QB had the PR machine in full effect, down to the BS story about Woody “feeling” Knight’s presence every time he walks into his office. Make no mistake, woody could give a **** less about Indiana basketball. He’s collecting checks to pad his retirement fund, while he and loud mouth Mariah laugh all the way to the bank. That egotistical tyrant told every one of us to sit down and shut tf up. And for you fans that have never coached, you heard the Remax man, “chill out!” While I would love a complete whiff in the portal followed by a winless season, woody will do just enough to make the big dance next year. He’s here for at least two more seasons. Ever wanted to feel hell? Buckle up, we’ve arrived boys.

Lmao. Thank you for the B12 shot this thread needed /s
