Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I *think* it was Ant Wright on Twitter talking about the state of the ACC and coaches possible being able to be poached. I had mentioned UVA’s struggles and that if I were Bennett I’d be worried about the future there with NIL.

The Big 12 seems more stable but I don’t know what the NIL future for basketball is at Baylor.

If IU is really taking about spending ~$8mil/yr for a coach, I’d assume any package comes with some beefed up NIL commitments for the new coach.

At that level of spending I’d take runs at both Drew and Bennett way before Pearl. Timing might be right for one of them.

Andy if you fancy yourself a top AD, you’d better be a closer.

Our NIL this year was almost 6 million. Not sure we need to beef it up too much.

Whenever I see "Bennett" I don't see his Final 4 team, I see UVA scored only 44 points the other night. Bennett as it has been said before, maybe on the other forum, will NEVER come to IU ... they fired his sister when she was the IUWB coach.

High school coaches and others in Indiana are not a fan of Drew. IMO there is no chance for him here.

I see one of the best programs in the country, conf titles and a national championship. Maybe twenty years of losing has taken its toll on the fan base where we now prefer style over winning basketball. I dunno… His sister was fired at about the same time as Knight. Those people aren’t even here anymore; half aren’t even alive. If fences can be mended with Knight, I’m sure they can be with someone who wasn’t even here. Especially with a $60mil dollar offer.

As to Drew, I remember the Hanner thing. Whether he has an irreparable relationship with the coaches as a whole, some decade-plus later, someone else would have to speak to. In a vacuum the money would be better spent there than Pearl.

The staff is saving their visits for portal visits in the offseason and that’s why they weren’t there tonight is what we are being told now according to Rabby. Trilly said his source says there is “no specific reason they aren’t out. They just…aren’t.” So take it how you want

That excuse from (through?) Rabby makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Going to watch a game and being seen doing so isn't a "visit."

I like him a lot but he would have to tell me how he is going to change his offense before I would bring him to town. He slows it down like Woody but doesn't use two big men

Woody has been too half to now too third in tempo this year, getting faster every year. I don’t really see the comparison.

I’d probably want to hear that too, but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker. Both him and Jay Wright tended to let their best teams off the chain a little. Bo Ryan did towards the end, as well.  But you can’t fundamentally tell them to alter who they are, especially given the success.

For Woody's sake, I would hope they would announce something before the Michigan St game so the fans could give him the standing ovation which I think would be deserved for doing the right thing.

So if we are definitely moving on, does this mean Woodson has already agreed to retire ?

He has been directly asked several times exactly what level he played at, as well as what level his son played, and he continues to avoid answering the question. Despite making 928 other posts and responding to every other comment in the thread. He has chosen his words carefully, and I personally don’t think it was even basketball he played “at a high level.” My personal guess is he got a yellow belt in youth karate.

Getting a yellow belt is hard you have to break a flimsy piece wood HI-YA!

Champ in 2019 he has been to one NIT and has lost in the 1st round of the NCAA's twice.

I don’t know if you saw last years tourney game but his senior guard made one of the all time uncharacteristic bone headed plays to lose the game. It happens.  But the point I was (and Ant Wright) making is that you use the current volatile landscape that is causing some good coaches trouble to try and poach them. We’re not going to get Bill Self, Dan Hurley, or Mark Few.

But I suspect 5 conf titles (most of those won versus Roy Williams UNC and K’s Duke) in ten years, 2 conf tourney championships (IU never has), and a national over the last ten years would appease the fan base.

If the standard is higher than that, why are we even discussing Bruce Pearl?

Announce retirement at the MSU game? He will get the loudest ovation he’s ever received. And he is probably too tone deaf to realize the reason we are giving him such a loud ovation. I will be at that game and will be sure to stand and clap for him if that actually turns out to be the case.

That would be awesome if he does it after we win and before senior night speeches!

I live in ACC country and am surrounded by UNC, Duke, Clemson folks etc. I watch a ton of UVA basketball with friends and coworkers. One thing we all agree on is UVA is atrocious to watch. Winning cures all I suppose, but personally I want nothing to do with slow, plodding offense. Bennet would have to have a plan to change his offense. After the seven years we’ve had I really don’t think fans want to see a team dribbling the air out of the basketball for 25 seconds every possession. Just my thoughts. I just don’t think it’s a good fit.

What kind of timeline are we looking at for the fire and the hire?

Why do people act like this is a forgone conclusion. I find it strange that no actual college basketball media is hearing and reporting on this if this is true. How is it that only Trilly is hearing this and nobody else

If this is your thread to wallow in misery and not willing to hear a single voice of opposition to the 50 posters saying the same “oh man, look at this, Woody is so dumb, fire him, well… we can’t yuh know… cuz Quinn.”

All good, seriously. Said my peace many times and you can all doom and gloom together. I won’t come back until we have a resolution. Even if we go on a magical run or something crazy. Won’t come back and gloat.

If we can get Pearl, fine. If not, it will be Woody, he will rebuild in portal when many thinks he can’t. He will then bounce right back into quality tourney team with some changes to staff and approach to a few things

See you in a few months when maybe everyone has chilled including me.

Did he just say bye without ever answering the question of his level of play?? I'm on page 329 right now because I slept last night.  I'm going to be shocked if I don't see another post from NGW before I get to page 343.
