Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

So, hypothetically— say CMW either a.) retires or b.) gets fired… how and when will we know? What will the tea leaves be? What will be the little tells or murmurs that we’ll look back on as indicators that things were going to change? What do you think?

I don’t see Woody wanting to stick around for any role other than head coach.  I do however, think that if the right voices get to him and tell him that getting Dusty May this year is the ‘bridge’ he was referring to when he was hired that he would be willing to start enjoying his retirement.

Did woody or Dolson actually refer to him as the bridge or is that something us fans attached to him?

Man, tough to argue with someone who doesn’t think or know for a fact that those guys talk directly to the recruits. Tipton is another one. It isn’t a rumor. The have directly said that multiple times. Hell, even logic says this.

why come to IU who has sucked and even “potentially” have to compete when I can go to Arizona, UNC, Kansas, Tenn, Baylor with a better team and wide open spot. All those teams took a guard we went after. Doesn’t even make any sense why you would want to go to IU. Go where there is playing time. What upside was there for them to choose IU?

Yeah, I am sure guys like Knecht would have folded come crunch time. Come on. It is called making a smart decision.

I think you're confusing the issues.  Of course, there are many reasons to choose other programs over IU.  But I disagree that coaches are "guaranteeing" starting position or playing time and that's why a player chooses to commit.  No coach that I'm familiar with would do that, as it sets up all kinds of problems.  Now, will they talk enough to give players an idea of their expected contributions -- darn right.  Things like --  "If you do this, I can see you starting for this team."  "I expect you to make a significant contribution to our offense and play a significant role."  "I project you'll be ______."  Etc.

If "guarantees" are a thing, and that is why players chose to go there vs IU, then riddle me this -- AZ got two PGs from the portal.  UNC got two SGs from the portal.   Did they promise them both a starting spot?  If they are afraid to compete against each other to earn their minutes, why did they commit?

We didn't not get the guards we needed because Trey and X were in "the way."

Man, I am not the one who keeps making stuff up. See my last reply to you. You have gone full May is Jesus reincarnate and you are making stuff up about Woody.  This guys record is no better than all the other hot guys who have flames. 50/50 at best.

I do not care if we have Woody or not. For the 50th time. Logic says May is not the best candidate. There are better options. You give Woody the year to prove all you wrong, get program is better place to hand over and in that year, you find the guy. May isn’t the one.

You're trying WAY too hard to defend a garbage coach. It really makes no sense.

Seems like we are back to arguing over whether Woody should be retained. I think it makes more sense for us to move now for a couple of reasons.

IU fans are not being unfair. We have high expectations yes, but as soon as we lose those we cease to be anything other than another run of the mill program in the B1G. If this was one down year, or if this year was injury riddled, and there was real hope for change next year I think people would understand.

What lost us is that Woody has given no one any reason to expect that his system will change.  A good coach would realize that X plays best as a drive and kick player and thus needs spacing to be effective. When asked about this, Woody doubles down. We know that he thinks there is no problem with his roster construction. We know he doesn't think we need to shoot more threes despite being 353rd in the country in attempts. There has been no indication that this will change, and we are basically looking at an all new team next year, making it an optimal time to move. Almost any other coach in the nation would have recruited Mgbako to play 4, which is why he chose to decommit when Duke's 4 opted to return. Woody has played Mgbako at the 4 in 1(!) game, after being forced to by MR's injury.

Woody doesn't have the energy to recruit. His recruiting as a whole has been boom or bust. That's what left us with 1 commit in what was supposed to be his flagship class. He went after good guards in the portal and missed but a good coach has a contingency for his contingencies. A good coach would have still gotten his 3rd target if he missed on 1 and 2 and not left a scholly open. I cannot explain enough how unacceptable that is. There are hundreds of guys who would have taken a chance with that roster spot, Woody just didn't look deep enough. We have all heard the rumors on Sisley and Mullins. Purdue is now looked at as the dominant program in this state. If we wait a year, that '25 class also falls to Matt Painter and we fall further behind. If we move now, we only risk our lone '24 commit.

Plus moving now is the cheapest option. Woody's buyout is less next year, but if he retired with 6-8 million, I still think the AD comes out ahead. May and Schertz are likely taking power 5 jobs. In a year they will have massive, first-year-of-your-contract power five buyouts. Right now, its only 1.5M for May and 250K (!) for Schertz. Woody is 65, the buyout for the next coach is coming. Why not move now when you could pay very little for the next coach, especially if someone like May can bring most of his roster and limit the damage to the program.

If moving now is the right choice, I think May is the obvious call I could explain why but I think I have already dumped enough text on you all for now

Back when Woodson was hired and they had Matta and Fife on board, I thought it was a good hire and liked what they had in place to help Woodson with D1 CBB since he never coached CBB.  But now that I am looking back on it 3 years later.  If they were going to hire an older coach, why didn’t they just offer it to Thad Matta.  The guy pretty much let soon after Woodson took the job and seems to be doing decently at Butler, 16-8.  I think that would have seemed more logical than Woodson

Im starting to think Quinn had the most pull on this. Woodson had been out of the league a couple years prior to joining the Knicks again. I’m sure he pushed hard for the job.

No AD would’ve hired him at the P5 level besides Indiana.

Woody said in his opening press conference that he would be a bridge coach. Bridging the old with the new so we’ll be good when the new coach takes over. If I remember correctly.

Matta's health was a huge question mark and fans might not have liked if he hired a guy who was pushed out of another Big Ten job

It’s hard to watch Matta coach at times, you can tell the guy is in pain much of the time…I really worry sometimes the guy is just going to fall over….not sure what all is wrong with him but dude definitely has some serious health issues!

See, here is the funny part. I am open to a rational argument on why. That “article” doesn’t do it for me. Watching his team doesn’t either. His results for sure don’t do it for me based on many factors. When they are questioned, really, “this guy is different.” He is no different than so many to come before him who then fail at higher level. Not an absolute he will. Never once stated that. But many are sure, just sure he is the guy. Can’t miss out on him!!

The irony to me is that so many are convinced Woody won’t change, Woody this, Woody that. 95% of that is based on made up stuff  people try and pass off as fact. So who is dealing in absolutes when they say Woody can’t and won’t turn it around?

I’ll give you a summary:

Dump Doug Collins and get Phil Jackson.

Matta was said to have failed a physical.  I remember Goodman had a picture with him and shortly after reporting that he had failed a physical. I think.  Not sure if true but I do know Woody had been given the indication he would have the job when this news about Matta broke. I know Woody was pissed but tbh he could have also been mad because Dolson was forcing another person onto the staff.
