Tell us Trayce! Hey Armaan left and we added two talented guards in less than two weeks. I think he knew we were adding guards. Brunk left last week.... probably knows we are adding some post depth. taco corp, FWHoosier84, mookied39 and 2 others 5 Quote
mamasa Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 @Chris007 was this one of the players you thought we'd be adding (thought you mentioned 2 that you thought were coming), or were you referring to portal additions? Quote

Honkyman Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 It is a very good pickup but it isn't like Tamar Bates is ranked in the top ten of high school players. He is a 4-star which means he has talent and potential. He is ranked #56. By comparison, Robert Johnson was ranked #53. So we can expect Bates will earn considerable playing time but it doesn't mean he will start. We'll see. Quote

And no one ever said they were, but many often think that Indiana HS All Stars are going to be special...above average... really good players because, well...they are coming out of Indiana HS's. Yeah, they have their work cut out for them. JMHO. IUBBx5Banners 1 Quote

At high major programs those should be spot minute guys as freshman and sophmores. Those guys are Brian Evans, Matt Nover, Roderick Wilmont, hell they are Dane Fife. You need those guys on a team. They are harder to keep happy with the transfer portal being so available, but if they are Hoosiers for life they will carve out their deserved space. Trey and Tony will be fine. The Johnson/Stewarts, etc. will be gone in a couple of years. Then what? They are 4 year players. Give them time to develop and compete. They'll come out stronger for it and so will the team. And to me, just convincing guys to stay, or getting a player in Johnson who already had a long-time relationship with Kenya, while nice, wasn't super convincing. It's different to come in and convince a kid with whom your staff and school doesn't already have a strong relationship. Bates is a game changer in that regard. Not only is he just the type of recruit that we should be focused on rating-wise, but his recruitment was wide open. To seal the deal with him so quickly is very impressive. Definitely bodes well for the future. Face it. Woody's killing it. Definitely a home run hire -- Grand slam, quite possibly. Expectations are high right now. The fact that Galloway got huge minutes last season and now projects for much less indicates we should be a much better team. It's always hard as a fan when you have 13 scholarships because you know only 9 or 10 will see serious minutes. Chemistry is tougher. But its crazy to not field a full team in actuality, because you never know about injuries, or who will develop the best. Our roster seems deep on paper if we land one more big man. Hopefully 8-10 really step up. Cookie, Hoosierfan2017, Stromboli and 4 others 7 Quote

So there is Gunn's scholarship available without a transfer if they fill the last spot with a multi-year player. Plus we'll see some seniors graduate and transfer as well. Quote

Johnson was a pretty solid player for us, though his last two seasons here he played on some pretty bad IU teams. He gave us 9 ppg on 39% from 3 as a freshman. Hope that Bates can give us something similar. Also fwiw, Troy Williams was ranked in that same range coming out of high school - #51. Bates could still move up the rankings too. Quote
