Maybe so.  We could have dropped $10M/year on Stevens, or $5M/year on Woody and spend more on assistants.  Big win there

that depends on whom those assistants turn out to be

Same. With an NBA guy, Matta, and some good assistants, this actually rules.

I’ll eat my words if this doesn’t work out, but I’m ready for them to come out swinging.

Don’t get me wrong , I think he can coach but I know him through the Knicks.  I don’t think he has the energy to recruit.

I’m concerned about this.  Low energy personality.  Maybe recruits and families will like that?  Maybe younger assistants can do a lot of the legwork.

Well Woody. Just win and we're all square here. Definitely going to have to win over the fan base.

Personally, I think he's already won most of them over already. It's just a few of you nay-sayers on here that are the hold outs.

I mean he won a national championship so......

And he's top 20 in all-time NBA scoring and pretty much a lock for the HOF......nobody should be doubting Carmelo Anthony's acumen.  Coaching him is a plus.

He needs some good, young assistants to help with that.  Lewis and Fife would be fine with me.

Order of business Coach Woodson ...

1. hire stud assistant coaches

2. Find players YOU feel will best represent IU basketball!

Look, gut reaction—I hated it. But despite his age, I’m coming around. I think several positives here:

1) he knows the NBA. He’s coached some good players and SHOULD be pushing their names and using those guys as recruiting tools.

2) he’s been successful in the nba. Was in staff with the 2004 nba champion Pistons. His Hawks team had a bette record every year he coached from 2004-2010.

3) he DOES know what it means to play for IU.

4) he is, and I say this with zero sarcasm and with 100% confidence that it will help, African American. I believe that WILL help offset some of his perceived recruiting shortfalls

5) he’s got Matta to help him navigate the rules of the NCAA and a true college basketball mind in his offices.

Now, I DO hope that he can bring in a dynamite staff to help him. He needs some younger guys and/or some really strong recruiters. I expect at least 1 IU guy to be on his staff.

We will see how it goes, but I’m going to support him
