I wonder if it would take that long if someone from the Indy Star or H-T submitted a request

Not sure what to think at this point. The extension Mercer got in 2022 was apparently set up to expire (sometime) tin 2026. If he’s already been given another extension then I don’t see why they wouldn’t announce it publicly like the 2022 extension (although back then it was one of several coaching extensions that were announced, including Moren). Mercer’s original hiring wasn’t announced until the first week of July, but maybe that was primarily due to losing Lemonis (to Miss St) in late June that season.

iirc Mercer’s 2022 extension was one of several coaches’ extensions announced at the same time. I don’t know if that would change anything this time around or not.

I gather Mercer got an extension in 2022 that is set to expire in 2026 (maybe in June?). Don’t remember him getting another extension later. I think aMercer was officially hired in early July (probably after that year’s College World Series). Miss State hired Lemonis in late June iirc.

I think the state of Indiana surpasses Kentucky, and possibly Tennessee, as well—but SEC schools are all expected to field very competitive baseball programs
-
If nothing else I’d think the state has at least as much talent as either Nebraska or Oregon. Not sure if it matters to the Administration or not.

Yes, it kind of depends on what Dolson, Pres. Whitten, & the BOT really want out of the baseball program. IMO it could be one of the best in the conference IF that’s what the powers-that-be want, but do they really want that? Dunno; it might require some additional $$$$. If they DO want that, it would appear unlikely to happen under Mercer. If Dolson does make a move, I hope he does a real search and doesn’t simply follow the path of least resistance and rehire Lemonis. Good coach, but there may well be some even better ones on the market as well.

Transfer Portal w/IU Interest

Sounds like something a UK or a KU might be doing fwiw, I noticed that Gabe Dynes is portaling again-former Woodson recruit iirc -

Likely that if IU is getting Burton and Sherrell they can’t also afford Reibe, especially if the other schools bidding on Reibe are UK and BYU. -

No one said anything about rescinding an offer. The scenario that was described is one where a “new” school (or multiple schools) start to pursue Burton since Houston backed off. If so, what if they offer more than IU does to Burton while IU is also pursuing Sherrell? I’d be surprised if IU offered $4 million apiece to BOTH Burton and Sherrell (unless they have more NIL money than generally assumed). -

Duke can get almost anyone they want and could have some guys more highly rated than MB for all we know. Thought I saw somewhere that Michigan’s PG will be returning next season. If Burton’s willing to pick a program like Auburn over home-state IU for an additional half-million or million, so be it. I guess you sign Clark’s nephew at that point and spend the “Burton money” on Sherrell and another shooter and a promising “power forward” type. -

But the “market price” changes if Houston’s no longer pursuing him imo. I don’t have a problem giving MB $2.5-$3 million but not $4. Personally I’d be reluctant to even give Sherrell $4 million, but I suspect IU might have to if they want to beat out other schools for Sherrell. -

If so, then it shouldn’t cost $4 million to get him -

It probably means he already had a verbal agreement in place with a specific school before he officially entered the portal -

IU hasn’t really “locked down the borders” since Mike Davis blew off in-state guys like Hummel, Johnson, etc and wasted time and energy chasing Josh Smith all over everywhere. -

Actually, if IU got him he possibly COULD start (depending on the staff’s overall success in the portal). Which is frightening to contemplate, since I don’t think he likely can defend at the B1G 10 level. -
Sounds like Feigen (sp?) may be a target too—Chicago kid so kinda makes sense

Probably wouldn’t have needed to beat Northwestern if they hadn’t crapped the bed vs Nebraska -

Wonder if Kenny J knows him? -
Which is why they may stay “in-house” and promote Davis, especially if they think it would give them at least a small chance of keeping the QB. But I doubt OkState would hire Morris unless they felt doing so would also give them a good shot at getting the QB.
