General Coach Candidate News
Magisterium replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My (possibly mistaken) understanding was that Donovan is only under contract with the Bulls for the remainder of this season, which for them could be mid-April. But I have no idea how he feels about college BB these days. -

Agree, and I still don’t think Cronin’s worth a $10 million buyout (as of April 1st) either. -

As I posted above I don’t “hate” Brownell or think he’s a bad coach but I don’t think he’s good enough to justify his buyout. -

I think Cronin and Brownell are both “good” coaches but in no world would I think either one was a good enough coach to justify their buyouts, especially on top of whatever “settlement” payout Woodson will likely get (as of April 1st Brownell’s would be $8.33 million and Cronin’s would drop to $10 million). And for those who want to point to Allen’s buyout, that was a markedly different situation-the donors weren’t coming up with the $15 million then so they could come up with another huge bag in order to pursue a “name” or “elite” coach, they signed a coach who was making less than $1 million a year in his previous job. If I were a big donor and Dolson came to me needing a bag for a buyout of a coaching candidate, it would need to either be a less expensive, or more impressive, name than Brownell or Cronin, or their specific buyouts would have to be negotiated significantly lower. -

I think it’s generally assumed within the coaching fraternity that Otz (among other coaches) would drop whatever he’s doing and run to Lawrence if Self retired. I suspect that is why his buyout was substantially reduced in his most recent extension-Kansas job, and maybe Texas job, more than the IU job. -

Maybe if IU offered the “ basketball GM” spot to Lloyd’s Director of Player Relations at Arizona that might help persuade Lloyd to come. Jason Gardner, familiar name to a lot of people. -

If I’m a mega-donor I’m willing to pitch in for a big buyout IF it’s for an Oats or an Otzelberger but not for a Cronin. Either his buyout would need to be dramatically lowered or I would advocate for hiring someone like McCollum and putting more money into NIL instead. -

If Dolson & company could somehow pull this off, it would be hilarious to see and hear all the “experts” and “analysts” who said it was never going to happen, and that the IU fanbase is toxic and delusional, pivot 180 degrees to talking about how risky the hire is because Brad has been out of college basketball for so long. -

That’s pretty much what I was told, which might explain Woody telling Dolson et al 4 years later that they would have to come to New York rather than him coming to Bloomington if they wanted to talk with him etc -

That’s pretty much how it was described to me by someone who also added a “prologue” by saying that Woodson might have been led to believe 4 years earlier that the job would be his when Crean was fired. Either led to believe that by Glass himself or by someone else. But it ended up being Archie instead. -

Looks like it (if he came to IU). Saw him mentioned by somebody on another site- looks like he’s only got one season left fwiw and I expect the staff’s already familiar with him -

The staff may not be done with OL recruitment but I think they still need a TE who’s a legitimate receiving threat and another pass-rusher -

Also looks like he changed positions due to growth and weight gain but he may have struggled with the transition it might be that the guys the staff are most interested in are Green and Staes -

fwiw a TE that Grant Wilson likely played with at ODU is evidently in the portal now: Quan Dunbar (actually a former WR iirc, so presumably has pass-catching skills)
