General Coach Candidate News

I refuse to believe any of the smoke about Woodson. Dolson is not going from throwing $7 million at Stevens to settling for an NBA assistant with a mediocre resume. Just ain’t happening.

I'd like to join you in that refusal, however stranger things have happened in all the previous coaching hires after Davis. I'd be shocked but not fully surprised.

Both have head coaching experience

The reference there was not for Beilein & Woodson, but on whether we would take a NBA assistant vs. college assistant.

My point was that the NBA assistant in question has head coaching experience.

Edit: I am not opposed to a Beilein hire per se.

As of last night, there were two clear front runners in terms of likelihood to be the next coach - Belein and Woodson.

Really? Says who? Did Dolson come out and say or did someone with "sources" tweet it or post it on a message board?

It very well could be those 2, but no one knows except Dolson and maybe a couple others and they ain't saying anything.

Nothing tweeted out so far has turned out to be right, so why assume it is down to those two. There is still a Tournament being played.

Woodson has the potential (mind you...potential) to be a GREAT recruiter--he has so so many recently retired NBA names that could be on staff. Also, he has been the 'offensive coordinator' for some very fast-paced, efficient, modern-era, three point friendly NBA teams. It's contrary to expectations from an old-school Knight-era guy, but Woody is a guy that really gets an offense humming.

Beilein? Great coach...great coach. Great guy. I worry a lot about recruiting with him too--not because of the 'thugs' comment--a good man like Beilein will have plenty of people to vouch for his character. However, it WILL be used against a 68+ year old coach that his shelf life is short. If not this year, then  a year or two from now for sure.

If those are my choices give me Woody every time.

Also, Woody

NO CONTEST... FOR WOODSON  :)

Dakich is on the Dan Patrick Show prattling on that Alford should get the gig.

Says he's against hiring the "hot" guy -- a-la Sampson, Crean, MIller.

I know Alford is his buddy, but he's been very unremarkable as a coach. If he didn't play at IU, he wouldn't even be mentioned. Why do people like Dakich think Alford coming to Bloomington would all the sudden make him a great coach? That puzzles me to no end.

He also said  he called Glass after he hired Archie and told him he just made a huge mistake.

I don't want Alford at all, but honestly if the administration is hellbent on picking an IU guy then he would be my choice. He's the only one with actual college head coaching experience. We'd know what we are getting, which admittedly isn't all that great, but I'd rather do it than take a flier on an assistant or Woodson.

Well at one point RMK told him it was his job when he was done......then it wasn't lol

I think that was before RMK thought he could bequeath it to Patrick like he later did At Texas Tech

I guess I'm confused, if all the rumors are to be believed, why Dolson started with his A-list candidate, and when that supposedly fell through he pulled out his D-list instead of waiting for the Bs to finish the tournament.
No one knows for sure if that is the case.

Dolson has done an excellent job of this.  All of the pundits who start tweeting it's "x" or "y" are probably nothing more than lurkers on btb and using our boards as their "sources".

i'm a source! i'm a source!!!!

Whatever offer he made for Stevens should be presented to Oats. Make him turn down 8 mil a year. Thst would be a grand slam walk off HR in game 7 of the NLCS.  If he turns it down, go to Musselman present the same offer. No way he will turn that down. It's what we have to do and we'll be back to being a really really good program.

Ehhh, I like both these candidates and am fine with a strong offer, but neither of them merit THAT much $$$.

I'm afraid that would put too much pressure on them because if you are getting paid like the top 5 coaches you better produce like the top 5 coaches. Let them earn that over a few years.

I’m thinking that someone in the athletic department is leaking names. The question is are they real names under consideration. I would think Scott would be keeping a lid on his assistants or keep specific information withheld from them if they really are that chatty. I think Scott probably is smart enough to keep things that are real under wraps.

Or what would be the reaction of we hired Alford and he was a miserable failure? Would DD turn on Alford, or would he find someone else to blame?

Imagine what will actually happen which is the same trend everywhere Alford has already coach and then listening to Dakich try to defend his boy for years. He's a clown.

If it’s not your money why would you care? I’d rather pay a large salary and have a lesser buyout if things went south.

Hopefully the focus and trajectory of the search has been consistent. He started out (it seems) looking to swing big and get the best guy possible. Sure would be nice if that continues throughout the process.

Yes!  I don't get this.  Why are people so skittish on spending other people's money?  I love to do it lol
