No one should give two craps whether a coach is associated with Knight. It shouldn’t even be a criteria. I may have missed it, but I haven’t seen a single person say what Beard did was ok. Here are Beard's records at Power 5 schools (omitting the shortened, final season at UT): 18-14 (6-12) 27-10 (11-7) 31-7 (14-4) 18-13 (9-9) 18-11 (9-8) 22-12 (10-8) 20-12 (7-11) 21-9 (10-7) Take away a big year 3, and that's very Woodson-esque. If I showed you that resume with any other name attached to it, people wouldn't get nearly as excited as they do when it's Chris Beard. And that's before we even get into the baggage. Beard has done this at schools that are not easy to win at. Heck, he probably wins a Title at TTU if not for the corner 3 from the UVA player in the title game. What he’s done at Ole Miss is nothing short of remarkable. Beard would win big here…it’s the exact reason why we’re looking at him…or as Rabjohns put it “thawing of the ice.” Indiana is at a fork in the road…do we want to have a REaL chance of winning again or do we go and hire another less than able or more risky coach with no high major experience while hoping for the next “Bo Ryan?” Far too often we’ve taken the wrong road which has led us to where we are. How many times over the years could we have had Pearl, Pitino, kept the HOF coach like Sampson? Multiple times. Instead, we hire the guy who is boring and doesn’t fit in the fishbowl at IUBB. It doesn’t work. If we end up getting a Schertz, McCollum, etc over Beard that will be a very tough pill to swallow as it’s the exact same play that we’ve made (sans Sampson) over the past 25 years. Popular Post Chris007 Posted March 7, 2025 Popular Post Posted March 7, 2025 I got a text from a buddy in the AD this morning. How many new subscriptions do you think Rabby got last night with the Beard talk? LOL, I bet every Facebook Fred signed up. If you're not going to get info, you might as well make money. He would make it through the football season. It's a no go ....Beard's wife after he wins the BIGTEN....lol jonz44, IU Faithful, Chris007 and 3 others 1 5

One can certainly interpret Beard's record as someone who could win here. But you could also interpret it as Beard putting together an outlier season or two early at Texas Tech, and then reverting to his actual ability level there after. He wouldn't be the only coach that shines bright early at a school, but is unable to maintain it. Again, what McCasland has done at Texas Tech makes Beard's 3rd and 4th seasons there more concerning. lillurk, raorIU, Chris007 and 2 others 5

But I don't think people would sign up for those end results. People keep saying "Beard wins." But he actually doesn't. His tournament record is really good, no doubt bolstered by a run to the final game, but 11-5 is really good overall. I agree with you though, I’d like to see a little better regular season & conf win %. IU Prof 1

He also had UT top 5 in the country in just his second season before being dismissed. He took Little Rock to the tourney and beat Purdue as well….I know you don’t like him and that’s fair, but to say he’s not a good coach is extremely false. I don't think anyone is arguing that he isn't a good coach, just that his career numbers don't really warrant the weird obsession with him. Even if you include his one season at LR (17-3) and his D2 time he is a career .520 coach in conference games with one final four and two elite eights. He is an excellent non-conference coach. He has done well in his NCAA experience. He is not (as of yet) remotely elite in conference games at the P5 level. One (tie with KU) conference title. He is a good coach. He is not (as of yet) the second coming of RMK and has baggage many folks are uncomfortable with. Dolson will have to weigh those things. I also think winning at TT and OM is hard, but GM seems to have done well at TT so who knows. I think good coaches produce good results, sometimes location is really overstated as a marker of coaching chops (I am skeptical of Collins and Brownell for example-- I think Beard would win more than either of them have at NW or Clemson respectively). Anyways, doubt he gets beyond interviews and vetting since he'd be at UK or UL if he could, but I will trust Dolson even if I disagree with his candidacy for HC at IU. FWIW and without comment: just being charged with something like that would keep you from being hired in my industry. It does not matter if the charges are dropped, they are visible on an FBI 10-year and would preclude someone from getting called back, much less getting to the interviews required for attaining the clearance needed. thebigweave, IU Faithful, lillurk and 9 others 12

Scott and the IU administration like that Collins is from a fellow B1G school, runs a clean program and has taken them to their first three NCAA tourneys. They think he can really prosper at IU with better NIL and easier admissions. And Collins thinks he'd be able to more at IU than at NW. Dolson, who knows his hoops, also thinks Collins' is a whiz when it comes to X's and O's. Plus, we just can't beat the guy, so we're looking to get him to join us. I wouldn't be surprised when Northwestern's season ends to hear an announcement of Collins to IU. OK, I completely made that up. Just trying to create a diversion from all this sordid Chris Beard debate. (BTW, I actually do think Collins would be a very good hire for IU).
