Can we have a Coaching Candidate discussion thread and a separate Coaching Candidate news thread?  Like links to credible sources and such only

RE: News Thread - We do but its buried about 5 pages deep on this board and hasn't even reached the 2nd page yet because there really is no credible news out there.

(just kidding for those who might actually go looking for this fictional thread)

I could get used to Drew but the church stuff loses me quickly. Cronin is OK, I think he would win but just not my cup of tea.

Didn't Crean have some of that? And I recall Cliff Marshall on Twitter (pre-X days) with some of it too... curious if that became an issue around the program...

With that said, from what I've seen of Drew, he seems to be more vocal with it... not in a "preachy" way, but talking about it a good amount..

Not the sexiest press conference choice but we could do a lot worse

As someone who lives in LA... He is going to wear out his welcome really really fast if he does not win...

Those PC look a whole lot different when UCLA is floundering

I actually feel better about getting May after just 1 year at Michigan rather than him being there longer and establishing roots. His bags still aren’t fully unpacked yet. It’s as easy as he appreciates the opportunity Michigan gave him, he turned them around, but he got an offer he can’t refuse to coach at home. I think the only way Dusty signs an extension with UM is if it’s because Dolson isn’t trying to get him.

I don't think an extension at Michigan would make much difference. Even with an increased buyout. Unless it's an astronomical number, if May is ho Dolson zeroes in on that's who we'll get.

Given IU NIL for men’s basketball Cronin and others will compete 3rd or fourth to top half of big ten.  With coach salary, NIL, facilities, and fans in a basketball state IU should have one of the highest winning standards for basketball hire.  Everything else is boring…..and just give a bunch of that NIL money to T. Moren and IU Ladies basketball program.

I so very much disagree.

And fwiw, May, had five years and a Final Four as a D1 head coach,  Kelsey had 12 years as a D1 head coach, and Pope had nine years as a D1 head coach when they were first hired for Power 5 jobs.

OK, you're right and I'm so absolutely wrong.

I guess the only option is to lure highly successful, extremely well payed old men away from established Power 5 programs

I know we can because we're Indiana, but if they all say no then what, shut the program down? No bright young minds allowed.

But it does seem like a recipe for disaster if you ask me.  He’s a solid enough coach.  Maybe a great coach. But he’s borderline losing his mind over the past 2 seasons and I don’t think coaching at Indiana will fix his problems.

It could work out as a disaster. When you say borderline losing his mind over the past 2 seasons, not sure if you're referring to something specific or the general reported unhappiness in LA and being snippy with people?

In LA, there are so many other things to do... I think he'd welcome an environment that appreciates and celebrates good basketball. Don't think UCLA fits that bill so much. I actually think that's where it could be a good fit here. That guy wants to win and he does a lot of it. He wants to win probably worse than any fans do. Definitely more than our current head coach.

I think fans would come to appreciate his fire, even if it comes off curmudgeon-y at times. Fresh start with a new fan base, I think he'd win people over by being an old school basketball coach type. They're not always going to use kind words to make people feel warm and fuzzy. I think Cronin was justified in calling out fans yesterday. Totally different situation from us this year.

It was complete BS for Woody to blame fans for his failures, but fans are not above being called out when it's warranted. IU fans have very high expectations that don't align with the reality of CBB IMO. Still, we only started booing when the team was getting blown out. IMO Assembly Hall would not be booing a team trying to fend off a comeback for a win. If they did, they should be called out.

I get not being excited about him personality wise. But it's true he's been way better than IU has in recent history. That's not the bar for success, but making the tournament every year is a pretty good floor. Not the best coach we've talked about but the kind of guy who can give you a shot. People won't find a coach that's regularly making the S16 every single year and also willing to come here right now IMO. Think there is a tendency to way overestimate the amount of coaches who fit that billing of success. Deep runs in March are special. Largely because they usually happen pretty infrequently for almost every program except UConn, Duke, Nova semi-recently. Unless you have a truly elite coach, every guy is going to have some stank on him. Just gotta find a stank you can tolerate and ride with em.

There is a wide range of candidates that are young, successful, have D1 experience, and are not at established P5 programs that would be very interested in becoming the head coach at IU.

Bright young minds can also have real D1, and even real P5 experience.

I have complete confidence in Scot Dolson. Some say he's playing chess while others are playing checkers.  Based on the Cig hire I think it's more like he's a computer. He used consultants to come up potential FB hires, and his own team to do background checks and vet them. He fed all that into his brain, and decided who he wanted and was ready to roll within a few days after he fired Allen. I bet he even had contingency candidates.

I believe he's been doing the same thing with this hire, and has been working on this well before the Woodson "retirement". I think he's also been keeping this under wraps, and knows a leak could cause his guy to back out. If i remember that was a requirement when we hired Bob Knight.  I also think he has a contingency plan in case #1 doesn't work out.  However my gut says he "has his guy" but the timing isn't right and probably won't be until the IU season and maybe others are over.

I know absolutely no one connected to the hire.  Just my 2 cents.

I feel the exact same way.
