I guess he forgot the goal was compete for championships, both conference and NCAA, and thought that squeaking into the tournament was the goal.

Yeah that’s what interesting, truly, is Mike Woodson said in his intro press conference that the goal was to compete for conference and national championships.

That wasn’t foisted upon him.

He was correct: those are (some of) the goals at IU. So now to want the story to be retirement AND complain to broadcasters that 21 wins/year isn’t good enough is rich. By the standards he set for himself he hasn’t succeeded!

Dude thinks he can stack the non conference schedule with a bunch of no name schools, go .500 in conference, and keep his job because “hey I averaged 21 wins!”

It will be forever baffling to me that he saw the results of the Ware-Reneau-Mgbako frontcourt last season, and decided "let's do that again, except with a more traditional center that doesn't offer any of Ware's outside game".

It's water under the bridge now though. I have liked his changes recently and I hope he goes out with a bang.

The biggest irony thing that could happen in this coaching search would be having to wait until IU loses in the NCAA tourney before they could announce Drew as the next head coach after Baylor doesn’t make the tourney.

It’s a bit more than that. Besides being stubborn as heck, his inability to have enough shooters around his very good Bigs, cost him the chance to have really great seasons.

Also it took him 4 years to stop platooning lineups, stop auto benching with 2 fouls. He still hasn’t limited the long 2 enough, but sitting Tucker has helped with that.

Speaking of Tucker, wow. That’s really gone South. Stuff behind the scenes must be in action because you’d think he’d still get some minutes in a limited role.

Think he could; since they've gone to this new lineup approach, they're at around 1.18 ppp on offense and 95.5 on defense. Those efficiency metrics are a lot like teams like Michigan, Louisville and UCLA. Hope they keep it up!

Yeah, there were plenty of things that just didn't need to have happened. It was there to be more successful, and it just hasn't worked. All of those things you describe have been problems.

The Tucker thing is interesting; think some of it is stuff going south, but a lot of it is Leal getting his minutes. I think a lot of the defensive jump can be found there.

Only took 3.75 yrs to make a small but significant adjustment. Tough to figure that out on the golf course or cigar lounge!

Am I crazy to think Woodson might try to walk back his "retirement" if he can win a couple games in the NCAAs?

Basically, try to rally booster support and force Dolson's hand on firing him?
