HoosierMatty Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 I don't see why Brad has to finish the season if he wants the job. Is there a financial penalty?

He coached under him and Pat knight so a little nostalgia around these parts are not going to hurt. His personality is what I would love to have here. Always going to promote the brand in a positive sometimes funny way(watch his campfire talks on YouTube). Defense is the calling card and he still runs a motion offense. Now those wanting Beard and thinking it will be modern basketball are in for a rude awaking. Most Tech games I watch are rock fights. I’m guessing his use of the 3 pt line and percentages are less then what people would want but if you are winning it won’t matter Beard is awesome man, I really hope if its not Stevens its Beard Uspshoosier, Indiana8585, HoosierTrav and 1 other 4

rcbowla Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 He had two fantastic back-to-back seasons - absolutely. Almost won a NC at Texas Tech - impressive. Last couple seasons, however, not mind blowing. Better than what we had but still - is this really our guy? I'm at least a little bit nervous with any of the candidates tbh. I know he is probably #2 or #3 on my list right now. I think he's proven he can build winners wherever he goes. From 2007-2016 TT made one NCAA tournament (in fairness that was Tubby's last season in 2016). Beard will have made 3 of the 4 that have been played while he was the coach. Only his first year did they not make it. You could ask @USPS if they would've made it last year or not but to me that's irrelevant. He took a pretty bad program and made them nationally relevant very quickly. Are things about him and his systems that give me pause? Yep. Do I think he's one of the top 3 options anyhow? YepSent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk
TheWatShot Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 If Beard coached here, it would be kind of nice to not get a ton of condescending crap from Purdue fans like we did with our previous coach.

It's not the pace or style many see as modern or exciting. However as you said if he wins will anyone care? I don't care if his teams get in rock fights as long as they throw rocks harder than the other team.Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk NVFalcons1990 and Uspshoosier 2

I know he got to the NT game just not sure he can replicate that anytime soon. But much better than Archie and probably would be a lot more stable than Crean.
BottomLine Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 Instead of taking wild guesses and wishful thinking, maybe the best approach to figuring out the new coach is to apply a bit of logic and maybe read a bit between the lines. So let's look at a few of the facts. 1. The decision to let Archie go was probably made before the last two or three games. It takes so time to put the buyout together. Archie's job was toast before we lost to Purdue and Rutgers. 2. While the AD made the decision the odds are good that he may have been approached by alumni before the end of the season with an offer to help. It seems more likely that the offer of money would have been made before the school started scouting around to find money. 3. Whoever coughed up the money probably had input into the identity of the new coach. If I was giving up that kind of money I would certainly want a say on what happened. 4. Since there is no blue ribbon search committee, the AD knows who the coach is going to be. 5. If the new coach is not currently coaching an announcement should come sooner rather than later and negotiations are underway and have been underway for several weeks. There is little to be gained by protecting the identity of the party. 6. If the new coach is currently employed he probably has a team in the NCAA tourney. Thus, the announcement would not come while his team is still playing. He would not want to upset team chemistry while they are still playing. The longer it takes to make an announcement the better the possibility that this is the case. 7. One big advantage of having donors pay for Archie's severance is that it makes it possible for the university to buy out a contract for a coach who is currently under contract. Paying both a severance and a buyout both would probably be prohibitive. 8. After four unsuccessful tries since Knight was fired, the AD doesn't want to get it wrong yet again. I'm not expecting another mid-major coach. The AD is talking to someone with a proven winning track record. I'm leaning toward someone that is in the Big Dance this year. I won't believe anything that any coach says while their team is still competing. Anyone that has picked up on any other clues please chime in. I'm all ears. cthomas Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 I have no insight whatsoever, but I think at the very least the next coach needs to be relatable to today's kids. Not something that pleases me, but the way of the world. I know I don't want a system coach. I want a coach who adapts to the strengths of the players. To me, there is no one right way to play the game. There is only what works best for who you have. As much as I liked CAM, I think that was his weakness. So, this was a long way to say that I want a relatable, flexible, open minded coach to lead the program. Admittedly, I don't know who that is. That decision is way above my pay grade. lillurk Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 I’m torn on Beard and so I think I’m uniquely able to make the case for either side. As others have said: high, consistent baseline at TTU, he’s recruited better than they typically do, two standout seasons there and a good one at UALR. The theory that he’s a great option is basically that his defense would travel, he’d recruit even better at IU, and that sets you up pretty well. However, even setting aside “will he leave TX?”...he doesn’t run an attractive, modern offense, so he doesn’t really meet that criteria of Dolson’s (and mine). I’d like to believe he’s adaptable, but IDK. I don’t think he’d be bad, but I think there are some concerns worth having. NVFalcons1990 1

Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk And that to me is the problem. As much as I loved coach Knight, the game was passing him bye at the end of his career. As a young coach, he was the most innovative guy in the game. But, he didn't adapt at the end. I don't want to go that route in this day and age. NVFalcons1990, lillurk and Class of '66 Old Fart 3
