Which is another good point. Some of our rivals had fake classes (or in UK…they just never went)…but as mentioned above, that team had good grades first semester. It went to crap after we self reported because in some players’ eyes… There was no point of going to class anymore - their season had just been ruined.
Yep iu destroyed itself on purpose

Watching Michigan win and Dusty talk… not to belabor the point… but unless we get a really great coach, passing on him to retain Woodson for a 4th year will feel pretty unforgivable for a while. Personally speaking.
Just one in a long line of horrible decisions made by iu. Par for the course

And the very next year Sampson’s violations were no longer ncaa violations. He had pissed off the ncaa when he left okla while it was under investigation for his “sins”….
The real underlying problem with Sampson though was his disregard of academics (several players were failing) and the drug culture that surrounded his program. He’s a Hell of a coach but he wouldn’t have ended up being right for IU anyway (I say that while ducking, his x’s and o’s are outstanding). Hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes here in Houston, UH doesn’t have the same academic culture in its sports programs, and he may run his program differently now after all this time and the experience of a 5-year show cause and  assistant coaching in the League.

You had way more of a drug culture with Tom Crean with players smoking in their dorm room, getting hit by teammates in autos, and getting arrested. Most of Sampson’s players quit going to class after their coach got canned. I believe Armon Bassett was suspended a couple games but was done internally. Who else got arrested or kicked out drugs?

Friendly reminder to everyone enjoying their Saturday afternoon.

Dusty May came off a national championship appearance and Indiana still failed to fire Woodson. Meanwhile, he’s at Michigan as the 3rd seed with a 23-9 record in his first year. What exactly did Woodson do his final year? Nothing.

Don’t think Dolson isn’t paying attention to this. More reason why this will be a home run hire.

Like they go to class now. Somehow nobody is ever ineligible anymore. It's a joke.

The ncaa is a joke for sure — but for us kinda older guys, RMK’s players graduated, and generally had B averages, he ran the program strictly.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some kind of academic hawk, but then you have a school like UNC with a history of a fake academic program- that’s complete crap.
A program should be working the line of ncaa rules, working with the bball program to advise it in the grey but not against the program as some kind of gotcha group, buy also not deliberately faking academics and ignoring the rules.

Because a bunch of people on this board went and tried to get the +5000 odds. Vegas and betting sites are in the business of making $.

It should be illegal to do something that stupid, unfortunately for us as fans it isn't.

Yep. If you believe KathyC and the dudes from that infamous podcast, it was very petty, too. Because Archie got four years, Buckner demanded that his buddy Woodson get four years. And though the on-court results weren't completely terrible at that point (after three seasons) -- there were plenty of other indicators that Woody was not right for the job.

Bucker and his rich friends' egos helped IU screw the pooch on that one.

No you didn’t, that’s just not accurate, and the player hit that you’re referring to? They were clowning around stupidly not doing drugs. There were players suspended for games under Sampson, but that’s not really the point— he was largely ignoring the mess within the program, you can read up on the total mess Crean inherited

Worst decision to keep Woody. This could have been IU and Dusty. But it’s just one in a long line of bad decisions that we continue making about our basketball program. That’s why hiring Brownell won’t surprise me. It’s just what we do.
