When he lets Talia break the Stevens news it’s going to show he does have a heart.

To clarify since the tweet about Brad at the game was from a “ Talia”—It wasn’t Goodman’s daughter—different Talia.  Covers Florida.

I think some of these things come from agents of potential candidates. The McCollum tweet the other night was from his side to gauge our interest since the Iowa job was opening up.

Chris, did we get confirmation on that coming from McCollum side?

Admittedly, I only came to BTB in 2021 - I was a peegs guy for looong time before that, so I'm definitely one of the new guys here. I was one of the many people who came for the last coaching search and because peegs have zero real info regarding the actual search (and it sounds like little has changed this time around).

Can anyone explain to me why there would be so much subterfuge on IU's part? I mean, I hear some of the craziest stories of distraction - things that would be almost CIA-worthy. I understand that some of it is jokes, but I think a lot of it is actually serious. Why would Dolson need to work so hard to fool people and send them in the wrong direction?

I can understand his reluctance to publicize certain details of the search, and he's doing a good job of keeping details to himself and his circle, but what does he actually gain by sending out even a fourth of the false flags that people are proposing?

Don't get me wrong - I find this board loads of fun and I've been reading it a lot. I guess a big part of me is just baffled by some of misdirection theorized by people here. It would only seem necessary in a Robert Ludlum novel. LOL

There's a couple schools of thought on why this would happen:

1) afraid of what happened last time - too many chefs.

2) no real advantage to making it public - looks bad when people say no and fans overreacting to every back and forth can make fanbase look manic

3) part of negotiations are salary - better off doing that in a vacuum so you don't get into a long back and forth. Or in some cases you don't want people to know who and how much your other offers are for.

4) Other party wants it that way for whatever reason

Note: i don't think IU is actively sending out misinformation but when no information is getting out people present speculation as fact sometimes

Or he does know, but this way if it’s Brownell or McCollum as the primary alternative choices, he can say “I was right,“ and if it’s not, he can say “I knew it was the third guy.”

Or he doesn't know, but it ends up being Brownell or McCollum, and he will claim he knew!

I get your point he may know.  That's possible.  But given the media the covers IU doesn't know and Scott is a vault, my guess is it's unlikely Goodman knows, though there is a chance he does...

I think Dolson is spending virtually zero amount of time or energy sending out false flags, trying to fool people or send people in wrong directions.

He's doing his job and keeping things as quiet as he can, but he's not wasting time sending out "smokescreens".

Yeah, why would he, when bloggers, podcasters, tweeters, and message board posters trying to seem or maintain relevance are doing it so well?

I hope this is over next week. If the coach is not announced and the portal opens can someone on the current staff offer players a scholarship. Another way of putting this is couldn’t the new coach being busy in the tournament let it be know that he is keeping one of the current staff and IU could make offers to players in the portal .

IMO if Monday comes and goes it’s not an NBA/currently not coaching candidate

If no coach announced by the 24th, the search has really gone belly up or Clemson is probably still playing lol. Even then I’d think we’d want it known who the coach will be because of the portal

I think that's probably right, but I also think anything from Goodman or Bozich is conjecture at best, and not from Dolson. With the last search, there was very little info out there, and then all of a sudden Woodson was announced. It would make sense that agents might be leaking some info, but I'd be surprised if anybody actually close to the search is giving out info about how IU has candidates ranked internally.

Anyone else listen to the Sleepers podcast talk about the off-court issues with Greg McDermott? They said like Beard, there's a host of issues with Gregg too that the public doesn't know about. (Not the same issue, drinking too much and physically abusing women, but they alluded to different skeletons.)

Then there's the awkwardness around what some other coaches have intentionally side-stepped when asked about Greg. One interview recently that comes to mind is with Crean.

Then there's the complete inability to even reach .500 in four seasons with Iowa St. when the season before Morgan got them to the tournament and the coaches after him--Hoiberg, Prohm, and TJO were at least able to do that.

Plus Creighton has a winning culture. It has for so long. Remember all the success Altman had there. It's kind of like Dayton.

Greg probably wouldn't flame out at IU like he did at ISU, but his success at Northern Iowa pales in comparison to what has come after him, he flopped at ISU, then landed in a place that has a structure and a culture that has produced winning coaches previously.

Listening to the Xs and Joes podcast about the criteria/formula for finding a successful P4 coach, and he doesn't measure up.

Generally speaking his teams have great offensive action--defense, not so much.

Again, I'm not saying he is terrible or that he wouldn't do better than Woodson, but I don't think his resume is such that he should be considered an upper tier candidate. Plus, Im really curious what those skeletons could possibly be. And, no, it's not just the "plantation" comment.

I haven't heard anything, but I'm sure a lot of coaches have skeletons ... the question becomes how big/bad is said skeleton? and without specifics, it's hard to say how disqualifying it might be ... I'm a bit agnostic on McDermott.

With regard to the bolded part, if "better than Woodson" is the standard, we're doomed. Just open a white pages phone book and pick a guy.
