General Coach Candidate News

So why did UK have to settle for Pope or UL for Kelsey

Timing most likely and misjudging the interest of top candidates.

Are you suggesting Kentucky can’t pull away a big time coach? For Christ sakes they’ve hire Pitino out of the Big East, Tubby away from an in conference school and Calipari coming off of a huge run at Memphis.

Big time programs hire from other maj conf schools quite a bit, for obvious reasons, but they don’t necessarily do it every time.

What if I told you they didn't settle?

So if IU had hired Kelsey last year our fan base would have been outrage. UL thought they had May after Drew said no. UK went after Hurley and Drew before selecting Pope

Until somebody posts a definitive “done deal” all they’re sharing is the information they have at that particular snapshot in time. It has nothing to do with being right or wrong. “Right or wrong“ on this particular topic is  wry much fluid.

It talks!

I like your style Stu. To clarify this GIF was me nodding in agreement to your post. Far from irrelevant. In fact I’d argue none of my visuals have been irrelevant. In fact I’ve tried to convey to the group what information I’ve been provided.

Some post long missives to make their point. Totally fine. I prefer pop culture visuals to espouse mine..

I love your posts with Gifs, it's like a game show...

Pitino didn't leave the big east for UK

Also show me the last few years where a lot of coaches left power conference teams for other power teams. Calipari left because he was getting heat and wanted out.

While true, we’re dealing with the same guy who bought out Archie for $10 million to turn around and hire Mike Woodson.

Then gave Woodson a raise for what should've been bare minimum expectations.

There's zero reason to have any faith that this hire won't be another disappointment.

And if elite coaches say no?

Every time I worry about an elite coach getting IU to the promised land, I remember that both Mike and Hubert Davis have been to title games.

Now, those kind of coaches won't consistently do that but it does show that roster construction is huge.  If Woodson could have just constructed the roster wisely, he'd probably be here despite having bad X and O skill.

Or, the two coaches sharing a name has allowed him to post what he has, and he doesn't want to lose that cover.

I think you're massively overthinking this. Is Brad Brownell really going to get someone excited enough to post about it like he has?

He was just trying to get RTZ to respond.  I think it clear RTZ was not talking about BB

Didn’t Dolson also renegotiate the buyout at this time too though?  Win-Win

Were the fans wrong to turn on the last two experiments?  I was willing to give AM a go, MW should have NEVER been hired in the first place.
I'll be interested to see how boy wonder mccollum does in the tourney vs a big name team

This was true 20 years ago.  Is it true today in the NIL landscape?  I legitimately don’t know.  Kentucky tried to pull Drew and were unsuccessful.  That itself is not 100% indicative.  I guess we will see if UNC and Kansas come open in the next couple of years.  I would be curious on what type of candidate they get.
