I can’t see Reneau guarding the better stretch 4’s or 4th perimeter players on most teams that use them. Race was a decent defender and got torched by Miami. Murray from Iowa? I love Reneau but he realistically can’t guard those types out on the perimeter. Otoh, Reneau is strong looking guy. Outside of Edey I can’t think of too many 5’s in the league that would be bad matchups for him. Reneau wasn't that far behind Race, a 5th year senior, by the end of the year in being able to guard 4s and other perimeter players this past season as a freshman. It is reasonable that he will improve in this area next season. How often do we play Miami or a Murray type player exactly? IMO, we're recruiting Ledlum/Battle in part for those situations. It will be nice to have more speed available to play at the 4 if/when we need it but we're not likely to need it all that often. Most of the time we will need size, both to get through the B1G and in case of injury. Reneau is serviceable at the 5 but he is a 4. I doubt he was recruited to IU to be pigeonholed into the 5 exclusively and it might be slightly important for Woody to stick to his word where Reneau is concerned. thebigweave, Stuhoo, CSP and 4 others 7 Quote

RaceToTheTop Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 Malik was shooting threes as early as our exhibition games. If he is able to even knock threes down at a 30-33 percent rate as a low volume shooter, that helps spread the floor. kottke, thebigweave and hoosierbgh 3 Quote

I normally enjoy UVA's style, but they weren't particularly interesting this year so I haven't watched the kid. I know he's billed as an athletic 5, but not sure if that's more vertical than lateral, switchable, etc. or what. That’s a good question I don’t know the answer to. I always thought he was more of a rim protector type, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t. Also, just going back and looking at some highlights and most of his offense on highlights are on screeing and diving towards the basket, duck ins and rim running from the short corner. Pretty typical non-featured big man stuff. thebigweave 1 Quote

I don’t really think most people think of players in the traditional 1-5 positions, and it seems most coaches don’t either anymore (although I’m sure some do). The reason for that is largely because of what you’re kind of telling me here on 4 vs 5. Practically there’s no difference between the two besides name and perceived size. Same with 2 vs 3. There’s really only perimeter players and post players, with the caveat that you need a primary ballhandler as one of your perimeters. So the question is whether you are going to play with 2 post players or 1. If Reneau is under the impression that he is a “4” or in essence a post player (because that is what he is) who is always playing with another post player (a “5”), then fine. But IU fans can put away their dreams for the next three years of playing 4out/1in with a bunch of athletic, switchable wings. Because that isn’t happening unless Reneau is going to be the single post (or if he leaves). It also doesn’t make sense for Woody to drop hints about wanting to play another style, either. I honestly don’t care one way or another. I wasn’t as bothered by playing through TJD nearly as much as some. But I am sort of pushing the discussion here regarding the perception many people think we’ll play next year—admittedly fueled by some of Woodys comments—versus how we seem to be recruiting the portal. I think it’s interesting given our targets. BannerVille, AkronHoosier and Hardwood83 3 Quote

I think it’s interesting given our targets. I think you touched upon an important distinction here. I don't recall ever hearing Woody promote playing 4 out 1 in. Modern basketball, definitely. Position less basketball, sure. The 4 out 1 in is, IMO, a product of the fans more than Woody. The only comments I have seen from Woody about playing a different style, were about not being post focused on offense. I think what we will see from Woody will vary some by personnel but will typically consist of 1-3 on the perimeter, a 5 in the post but not the focus of the offense normally, and a 4 as a hybrid that spends time on the perimeter and in the post depending on the situation/play and their strengths/skill set. thebigweave, str8baller, moyemayhem and 2 others 5 Quote

If it's with a traditional line-up, that's fine too.
