JG “allegedly” considered leaving the past two years.  I’d bet money, without any (zero) inside info, that he leaves along with Duncomb. That would mean 6 open slots with only two incoming freshman so we have plenty of room to add guys through the portal and let’s not forget that Bates and Malik were both late HS additions.

I think your right on with Geronimo/Duncomb.  I would take it a step farther and bet money that at their year end sit down with CMW those two are told it’s going to be real hard to have a significant role on next years team.

I project Losing Duncomb,, Kopp, Race, TJD, JHS. I think we also lose one of Geronimo/Gunn.

Not as starters but for organizational purposes.

1. X, Cupps
2. Galloway, Bates, Leal
3. Gunn, Newton
4. Geronimo, Banks
5. Reneau

X, Galloway, Bates, Geronimo, Reneau our most likely to be POSSIBLE starters. But not all 5.

Portal-wants.

1. A legit 5/big man. Starter type. Hoping for a home run.
2. An experienced W/G scoring who can shoot. Hoping for a homerun.
3. A back up 5.

Id be happy to see everyone else back, assuming the desire and happiness of the player.

I think this is fair but also think it is a mid pack team in the BT.  Really think we need to add another top scorer, big and outside shooter.

Yeah, we need a lot. And a lot of player development to try to be a top 25 team.

I’m trying to imagine the type of guys we’d have to add to be a preseason top 25 team by the critics.

I think 2 great transfers, especially a rim protector.

Most B1G teams except Northwestern and Penn State will be better next year.

I hope they only get a couple players. It seems like we can do well for the 2024 class.

Leaving roster spots open was a silly idea when Archie tried it and it is an even sillier one now. They need to build a full team this year and rebuild it again next year as necessary. Decent transfers contribute more than all but the best freshman so it is going to take a mix of transfers and talented incoming freshman every year.

With Stansbury out at Western Kentucky, I wonder if Jamarion Sharp will hit the portal.

7'5", just finished his sophomore year, truly mobile, good defensive instincts, and with a good motor. With some real coaching he could be special, and he fits the rim protector mold like few others. And if you ever hear him interviewed, he seems like a really nice, squared away kid.

He took a quick portal look last year - I expect him to go to the portal with his coach departing.

If we can identify the right players. Not everyone transferring is a stud.  Quality matters and I don’t want to waste a spot and have a player actually be detriment to team chemistry.

We literally had fans that wanted this done because they couldn't handle the oversign. We are a very wishy washy bunch.

Team chemistry is always a concern and IU definitely needs the right fit as well as talent but they need bodies. The spot is only a waste if we were to miss out on a better fit/talent for this upcoming year. Any that don't pan out won't be around to take up a scholarship for another year.

Don’t let Matt Painter hear this

I only say this because I believe some of the past transfers in the past have caused chemistry issues. Chemistry issues typically linger and that it could lead other players to develop the wrong mindset (maybe the freshman). I’m not saying no to getting a bunch of transfers, I just want it to be the right fit.  Our women’s team is how I want the men to pursue these kids.  Everyone of their transfers were all on board from the get go and all know their rolls.

Notre Dame G J.J. Starling hits the portal. Former 5 star 2022 recruit. 6'4" 11ppg, 2.8 reb, 1.1 ast, 1.5 TO, 42% FG, 29.9% 3PT

It would not surprise me if there is IUBB interest here.

Look past the numbers -- this kid played a lot of minutes as a freshman on a team with pretty much no other shot-makers. He had to create and take a lot of tough shots with no big like Trayce to attract attention away from him. He did fade badly down the stretch of the season -- clearly got frustrated and was unhappy at the end of the year.

However, very talented/dynamic and very high quality kid/academics. Was a Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern decision the first time around.

I trust the current staff. They've shown they are willing to give kids a chance but will cut ties when necessary. At the end of the day you kind of have to because chemistry can be just as much of an issue with incoming freshman as transfers so they're going to be making those decisions regardless. In some ways, I can see it being a little easier knowing what to expect with a transfer that has already played a year or more of college ball. I'm also not too worried about anyone corrupting freshman like Newton and especially Cupps.
