Perfect response. And the criticism that CAM might be hiring a, gasp, mid-major coach just aggravates me to death. Some of the very best coaches in the game are mid-major coaches. If I had to argue who the best game coach in CBB is, I would probably say Randy Bennett or Bob McKillop. If I had to argue who the best game coach I’ve ever seen is, it would absolutely be John Kresse. Just because a guy hasn’t sat next to K or Beilein doesn’t mean he hasn’t learned from a great coach and wouldn’t be a huge get. Great post! Popular Post Brass Cannon Posted August 21, 2019 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2019 The biggest splash we made on the assistant search the first go round was Schilling and look how that turned out. Not sure why people think a big splash is so important here. HoosierAloha, Stuhoo, Ranger78 and 9 others 11 1 Quote
woodenshoemanHoosierfan Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 Exactly. I can’t imagine being upset about this? Do the people that are upset know a single thing about Mike Roberts the coach, any recruiting ties he may or may not have, or really anything about his coaching prowess. Is he good at advanced scouting, implementing game plans, developing players? They just like to be negative. My bet is they have no clueSent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk IU Hardcore and Chris007 2 Quote

We’re all IU!! I have never subscribed to the idea that we need an IU guy as I believe the correct fit and skill set is far more important. I didn't even know Mike Roberts was coaching so I can hardly say if he will be a good fit or not. I highly suspect though that he will be a far better choice than Cheaney, who many were clamoring for, would have been. I'd much rather have a guy that has committed to making a career of being a coach and is pursuing it to his fullest than someone that is not as dedicated and doesn't want it as bad. How good a player was has little to do with how good of a coach they will be. thebigweave, Str8Hoosiers, BGleas and 9 others 12 Quote
VO5 Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 I’m not going to pretend to know anything about Mike Roberts as a coach or recruiter. Based on that my opinion on the matter is probably worthless but on the surface I am underwhelmed. He may be the best thing since sliced bread but I just do not see it. I do know that there HAD to be better options out there because I have read from people in the know that we have the money to throw at assistants. Who knows what ultimately led to the hiring. Hoping he is better than Schilling at the very least.. Josh and JaybobHoosier 2 Quote

Honkyman Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 Mike Roberts is hardly a home run but probably the best we can do under the circumstances (i.e., late summer means bad timing; IU's reputation is down nationally). If it is Roberts, give the guy a chance. He undoubtedly brings skills and perspective the program needs. ElectricBoogaloo, Chris007, mdn82 and 3 others 6 Quote
pumpfake Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 I'm trying to think of any time we either had a new head coach hiring assistants or had to replace one that fans were really excited about who we hired. Probably the most enthusiasm was when CAM hired Schilling. Ed was thought to "check all the boxes" and fit the description of being a home run hire and look how that worked out. Bottom line is that most of us don't have a whiff of a clue how well a coach (particularly an assistant) will pan out. It's nice to have someone with an IU background or name recognition, but this is totally about CAM getting guys that will share his philosophy and work well with/for him. cthomas, JaybobHoosier, Class of '66 Old Fart and 4 others 7 Quote

HoosierCoop Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 Mike Roberts: I know nothing about him as a coach. Wasn't a stellar player while at IU. Observed the last bit of the old culture at IU. Was in our last NC game. Observed adversity, determination, and achievement during that season. Who else came from that culture era? Michael Lewis (unavailable) and Dane Fife (unavailable) Name 5 NBA all-stars that are great college coaches? IMO, Archie may be looking for that last bit of IU culture and to understand what it takes. I don't know if it's a homerun but it may be what this program needs. woodenshoemanHoosierfan, Stuhoo, thebigweave and 2 others 5 Quote

And it's because this site has posters that know what the heck they're talking about. As much as I'm not a fan of self-congratulations, it came to my attention that other sites were self-congratulating ... heavily, all while NOT knowing what the heck was really going on. So I'll leave that there, and try not to do this again; but it kinda ticked me off when another site had snarky mod posts about their wonderfulness, about how they weren't sure that this board even existed, and then interspersed them with completely off-point information, all while we were hours into discussing the eventual hire. Rant over. thebigweave, hoosierfan6157, Class of '66 Old Fart and 10 others 13 Quote
JSHoosier Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 If it's Roberts I'm glad he has IU ties. We've gone away from IU long enough and it's failed. I don't know about him as a coach but I will not assume he'd be a good hire just because, not wired that way. I would hope we at least reached out to the likes of Lewis, we don't know if we don't try. Quote
Popular Post Chris007 Posted August 21, 2019 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2019 One thing that excites me about this hire is Mike will handle all of the fall workouts, just like Schilling did. This is what fits Mike the best, he will get the most out of these kids, he is not afraid to get on someone. He will jump right into this role and run with it. Popular Post Chris007 Posted August 21, 2019 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2019 I know Mike personally he worked for me at IU for two summers. Awesome dude. The nicest guy still comes to say Hi when he is in town. Quick story, one summer Tim Garl brought me Mike Roberts, Ryan Tapac, Mark Johnson, Rod Wilmont, AJ Ratliff and Robert Vaden who all needed summer jobs at IU. The job was 8-4:30 Monday-Friday. We couldn't fire these guys. Mike was there every day for the whole summer, never missed a day, an hour, nothing. Was always so nice, spoke to everyone, got along with everyone, and was a hard worker. Pretty much the same with Tapac, Johnson and Wilmont. Now Vaden and Ratliff was a different story, they usually rolled in around 10 or 11 and left for the day by 2 or 3. Then they were always upset that their pay wasn't that much. Anyway, I have the utmost respect for Mike Roberts. HoosierDYT, pumpfake, VO5 and 22 others 22 2 1 Quote
