IU vs. OSU Postgame Thread

My thing with play calling is as a coach, you generally have 2-3 plays in your back pocket that you save for games like this. Get those plays out. Except for the throw back pass to Zander, I didn't see much creativity in play calling

Seemed like their plan was to have Howard go up the middle for 5-6 yds on 1st down to create manageable 2nd/3rd down situations. When he couldn't return, they had no recourse.

Pulled these from Albers twitter.

Kevin Wilson: “I told them in the locker room, ‘We thought we could play. Now we know we can.’” #iufb

Wilson said Nate Sudfeld wanted to come in the last couple drives. Wilson went with Diamont. #iufb

Kevin Wilson didn’t answer with a yes or no, but it sounds like he thinks Sudfeld and Howard will be available to play next week. #iufb

Incredible game. Most of all I am very impressed with the poise of this team and the fight. Despite the injuries, and giving up big plays, the team never rolled over. Most importantly, no turnovers (except the turnover on downs from the punt) and we had significantly less penalties than OSU.

I don't have a problem with CKW's play calling at all. It is a shame Sudfeld got hurt. The offense looked really good before he aggravated his ankle. We were attacking the defense on all levels. After Sudfeld lost his lower body strength, the intermediate passing game was gone. Even before Sudfeld left the game, there were three or four drives that were pretty much wasted because he couldn't plant his foot and throw. If anything, Diamont should have come in earlier.

Diamont looks heads and shoulders better than last season. He still doesn't have the arm to threaten the field like Sudfeld can, but I am confident we can win with Diamont this year. With a week of game planning, the passing game will not be anemic like last season. I have a feeling we will see a lot more passing off play-action, he's ready to make plays with his arm.

Penn State won't know what hit them next week. Hope Howard gets better soon. The kid is tough as nails.

With the play calling, the entire 3rd and 4th quarter we ran up the middle every first down and got nothing. You have to change it up. The offense was completely predictable, and it showed. With Howard I understand more because he always falls forward because of his power, but Redding can't do that near as well. To me, that hurt us the most outside of injuries!

The team left it all on the field, it just didn't go in their favor in the end.  Hopefully they realize they just gave the #1 team in the nation everything they could handle and use it as motivation going forward, instead of getting disheartened and having an emotional letdown next week.

The coaches didn't do them any favors with play calling.  Running up the middle was ineffective all night but they kept going back to that well no matter how many times it came up empty, and it put us in a lot of 2nd and 3rd and long situations.  Not a good recipe.

This is another season where Diamont really needed a redshirt to learn and work on his passing.  He's better than last season, but he's still pretty bad passing and that's kind of a big part of being a QB.  He showed some flashes but still has a ways to go.

Just realized we held Elliott to 79 yds on 20 rushes outside of 3 runs. Those damn big plays were a killer. ESPN in their article brought up OSU and their 500 plus yards but 3 turnovers. I am of the opinion if the 3 turnovers were a fluke then so were 3 runs (55, 65, and 75). Our defense did a hell of a job for the most part. Would it look better for ESPN if we took out all of the "fluke" plays? Would 322 total yards of offense and no turnovers make them look better? Just reading their recap it seemed as if it was not fathomable we were +3 in turnovers and it was flukey. Then they follow up 3 50 plus runs like that's not.
