I'd say the talent is there. Depends on how fast they can bring him up to speed. Well, lucky for them, they have a bye next week so that will be a big help! HoosierReb01 1 Quote

Oregon, USC, Nebraska, NW, Michigan...not a cakewalk, but they should win all of those even with their back-up. And then they're going into the post season with either a backup or a noodle-armed, even more skittish Sayin. They're welcome to pick their poison and I'm happy to watch them drink it. realTomCrean Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Have Coach Cig and Shanahan ever been creative in the running game at IU? I can’t really recall the first year here. I know we ran some jet with Cooper last year Quote
Aaron Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Cig made the classic mistake of thinking because he turned Mendoza's interception problem around he could do it with anyone. Some turnover prone QB's adjust by throwing high as Hoover has when trying to coach it out of them. Much rather have a QB like Rourke who is more boring and not turnover prone. If you can find a Mendoza and coach it out of him great but can't be expectation. Still love this team and Cig and only a minor blemish and expect to win out this season. However, IU is extremely lucky they have two 1st round draft picks at wide receiver and two pro running backs and an elite defense where you can scheme around Hoover and still win 10-11 games. Won't always have that and QB with Hoover's issues could easily drop Hoosiers to a 7-8 win squad in other seasons if talent around him were not this elite. Hopefully its a lesson to Cignetti that he can't take every turnover prone QB like Mendoza and turn him into a Heisman winner. I totally understand the thinking after last year but this should teach him most turnover prone QB's are not so easy to fix. When he goes into portal next year need someone who is more accurate and not turnover prone. Especially with Moshaun Sales and Davion Chandler and a transfer or two as main WR's likely. Won't be able to just put it near them like Hoover does with Becker and Marsh and they usually catch it anyways. Need a much more accurate non-turnover prone QB in future. str8baller 1 Quote

If we were going to get a portal QB, the choice had to be made from who was available. Cig looked them over and took what he thought was the best available option. There isn't a Fernando available every year. Hoover's still a work in progress. Still a ways to go this season. Napleshoosier and Dave from Dayton 2 Quote

Drew Mestemaker at Oklahoma State or Colton Joseph at Wiscy have been better on far lesser teams. Imagine what they could do here. I know its not Cig's ideal prototype with either but Hoover was definitely NOT been best portal QB. I'm fine with a pro style guy like Cig wants, but then it needs to be someone like Rourke who isn't turnover prone then and has to have interceptions coached out of them. Turnover prone QB's often end up far more like Hoover and throwing high to compensate when trying to fix it. Mendoza was special and Cig hopefully learned you need someone who doesn't have to have turnover prone play coached out of them to have best chance to be elite. Hoover is who he is. An average QB with elite team around him that can be compensated for. Not ideal but definitely not something that can be counted on in future. Quote

He was following his coach and was one of the top QB's in transfer rankings for a reason. Colton Joseph? Have you lost your mind? He isnt even close to the QB Josh Hoover is even with his faults. KingPG21 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 I think I'm speaking to a consensus on here. Our vanillaish offense is kind of hard to watch. Our run game is very vanilla. Our passing game is pretty diverse, tho we have two elite weapons there. Like our defense makes adjustments throughout the game, but our offense just seems so scripted all the time. Like its successful, but again we have a really good QB, solid RBs, elite wideouts, and a good enough offensive line. I think my biggest takeway from this game is I wish we were more creative on offense, especially in the run game. Do wonder how different it looks with Martin since he is a different runner than Turbo and Beebe Quote
Brass Cannon Posted October 18 Posted October 18 And now Notre Dame is down at half. We likely could have been the #2 team. Ugh Quote

Not sure what you are talking about. Mendoza had a 1.6% interception rate (6) the year before he came to IU. He had a 1.6% at IU as well, with 6. Hoover was like double that. Quote
