Because we lack good Bigs and have limited roster space at this time. Probably after this weekend it will make more sense. Just unspectacular in a “position of need”. As a bench guy it’s cool.

Alexis is a depth piece, for sure. Let's hope Kenny can really develop him!

Alexis played a ton more during cupcake season for UF, and the very good block rate was in a much lower tier conference.

While that may be correct, Alexis missed the last 7 regular season games because of an ankle injury.  And then suffered another ankle injury just before the SEC Tournament.

He suffered the injury at Mississippi State on Feb. 11 and had his left foot in a walking boot. Golden said Alexis returned to practice on March 3 and was progressing well... per  Sam Alexis injury update: When will the Florida forward be back?

Text from my UF son, who is a bball player who grew up a rabid IU fan (and I suspect would still root for IU over his own school even after they just won the natty— I raised him right). My kid also sat in the first ten rows of the student section for every UF home game this year. This is what he’s got on Sam Alexis:

“He’s not bad, he’s strong/decently athletic and can rebound and has some post moves.
He’s a true center and not a very good defender and definitely not a rim protector. Hopefully he’s not a starter but he’s definitely decent.”

I then asked him for a player comp and he said: “Kind of a shorter DeRon Davis before Davis got hurt.”

I'll take another Deron Davis before he got hurt. He was a player.

Alexis is actually pretty good. From what I’ve seen of DD teams the defense relies less on bigs. They focus on stopping drives before the paint area. This style is so foreign to the big ten. So much length already(not height) that they will get backside help blocks. This bunch looks speedy too. The opposing team better get back on defense.

He’s not bad in spurts, but there’s no way he can be your only defensive oriented player in the front court next season. What if he’s only good for 10-15 mpg or god forbid he gets hurt again? Need a rim protector who you can rely on for ~20 mpg, and if it cuts into Reed’s minutes, so be it.

Here is an interview with Sam Alexis with Jim Coyle on ISB radio.  He seems to be a guy who plays with emotion, wants to crash the boards, an d shut down the guy in front of him.  I am ready to watch this team play.

Per my UF student son, Sam Alexis is a completely goofy, Tiktok dancing, funny, cool guy.

And as an aside, Jim Coyle seems like a good guy who loves IU a ton, but he really needs to talk way, WAY less in these interviews and let the interviewee explain things.

After listening to a handful of interviews and quotes from our new guys, I've got a pretty good idea of the type of player and program culture CDD is looking for -- and I like it and think it's going to make a big difference.  Like you I'm looking forward to cheering for these guys.  Onwards and upwards.

Dbag Dan's head will explode. That'll be fun.

Sam Alexis says he loves watching Draymond Green and screaming when he shuts someone down.

I'm with him; I also love watching Draymond and seeing players scream with emotion when they get defensive stops.

Jimmy Chitwood ain't walking through that door.

LOL, that will be fun to watch!

Any time someone can do something to annoy him I am 1000% in support of it. I’d love nothing more than him to not have a platform in Indiana and become a Kentucky or better yet UCLA so him and Lavar Ball can be best friends because they both think they are God’s gift to basketball!

I like Coyle, but he does talk a lot before the question.  I get it that some of these guys you need to draw the words out of them, but you don't need to give the kid a lecture.

You know who does a damn good job of getting kids to speak freely without speechifying? The Hoosier Hysterics (*ducks). They certainly have their downsides, but they are damn good at that.

They just talk too much at the beginning.  If you skip past them rambling about whatever and get to the guest discussion it is good

I actually like the Hysterics guys outside of some of the antics they have had over the years.  The Brian Evans interview last year was epic.

Jim sounds like Champ Kind from Anchorman.  He does great with post game stuff but with an open mic he's seconds from yelling "WHHHHAAAAMY!!!"

He's a good dude though.
