Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Recommended Posts

Woke up this morning even more pumped about this hire than I was last night.

We had probably the worst B1G coach the past 4 years yet still managed around 20 wins per year.

Now we have a proven winner in college basketball who has spent time at a Power 4 school.

I have to think that will be good for an additional 2-4 wins per year.

Let's freakin roll.

See yall in 4 years when everyone else is calling for his head. I’ll keep the receipts. Bye

You not spreading negativity regarding unknown outcomes for next 4 years would be a fair trade if it doesn't work out. Farewell.

OMG this is the best video ever! Unless it was all tongue in cheek, and then? Well played.

What will this guy post when WVU hires McCollum , who is not “a Mountaineer” and leaves Drake for a better opportunity and more money?

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAlololol

I feel for 'em tbh. Hard to go from Huggins to your 4th guy in 4 years.

He’d win ALOT of people over if he somehow got Mullins to come be a Hoosier, seems unlikely but that would be one thing that would help lol

No he wouldn't. He'd win a few, but the rest would find another reason to b!tch about the hire.

Big win, Tyler, big win....

Still only considered a Quad 2 lol. I very much hope Carolina ends the year with a single quad 1 victory to their name while staring down the barrel of that Hubert Davis extension.

I'm certain that Duke fans were thrilled with this win. Anything to further secure Hubert Davis as UNC coach. They LOVE this guy...LOL

You know it's a bad sign when your rival loves your coach.

I like everything I've heard people say so far. Doug McDermott had really good things to say. I'm very excited.

I'm old enough to remember when Collin Hartman was telling anyone who would listen that Archie Miller was going to win a National Championship at Indiana.

Think that says a lot about the different variables that go into coach success, and how unpredictable it is. I don't think we'll begin to have an idea of how this hire has gone until about a year from now.

The one thing we all know about this place: It's rarely as good as some think it is, and almost never as bad as others say it is. No one truly knows how this will turn out, but right now, its a clean slate.

I know this isn't apples to apples, but go back and see how many people said Cig would fail here. His system, players, background was not good enough to succeed here.

As fans, we are hungry for much overdue, sustained, success. Hopefully, that's what we all want. Hopefully, we are willing to allow it to happen.

There was a verbal agreement and he did back out on Sunday night. That led to my :( on monday. Others like rtz for example said they still felt good about it but i held out hope. (not a shot at rtz). given that came Sunday to turn around and announce your new coach on Tuesday is impressive to me. I thought scott would try and convince a bigger name in the tourney which led to my "mystery canidate" prediction but he chose to get ti wrapped up to get a head start on portal. I am happy with where we are.

Can’t believe we didn’t even get a “I’m still a Masshole” comment from Stevens. Lol

Maybe a little longer than that. We have to see how he will recruit, not only from the portal but also HS players.

He had a pretty good class at WVU, so one would assume that he'll be able to recruit HS guys at IU.

Honest question... Did you ever hear about DeVries during the search?  Sounds like we reached out pretty early according to the people on the West Virginia side (Bahamas for the more conspiracy minded, but February at the latest).  The search firm IU used was used by West Virginia last season to hire DeVries, so discrete communications would be easy.  Some of their reporters think the deal was verbally agreed to last week after they lost in their conference tournament.

Good morning, fellow idiots!

I watched a couple of WVU games last night and thought I share a few quick observations.

1) DeVries: Very calm during the game. Not a yeller/screamer but still engaged.

2) Defense: The defense really stands out. Players are very active and very handsy -- getting into passing lanes and deflecting. They are intent on disrupting opposing offenses and are successful more often than not.

3) Offense: Tempo is the big talking point after looking at the numbers. I'll say the offense isn't boring. It's not a slog to watch. There's a lot of movement and cutting that creates really good shots. They will go deep into the shot clock but will also take advantage of transition opportunities and quick scores when they're available.

Speaking of transition, rebounding is another thing that really stands out. They are good on the defensive boards but don't crash the offensive glass seeming to prefer getting back to prevent opposing transition opportunities. So don't expect Izzo like second and third chance offense. But like I noted above, the offense generates really good looks and shots. You're fine with this approach as long as you have good shooters/talent making the most of those opportunities.

Lastly, the games I watched were both WVU losses. The team never quit or seem disengaged.

Just some first impressions and I'll also say that DeVries's "style" is really hard to pin down from looking at KenPom and Torvik numbers. He's kind of been all over the place which either means he doesn't have an identity or he tailors his style to his personnel. I'm leaning toward the truth being the latter based on what I watched.

I know people have a lot of bad feelings about the packline but with the portal I feel like D-Rock can recruit players/bring players with him who buy into that and he knows exactly what he wants. I feel with Archie he didn’t really have an identity with who he was recruiting except to recruit Indiana hard and that wasn’t necessarily smart when you run a specific defense.

I wouldn't try to explain anything to anyone on here they don't deserve it.

Neither of the stuff about Stevens is good. Either he:

1.) Didn't have any interest from the start and turned IU down right away. Or

2.) Strung IU along and reneged on a verbal agreement at the last minute, thus kind of screwing IU over.

Either way, can we please forget about this guy? He hasn't coached college basketball in forever. He had a great deal of college success with exactly one group of guys, and at a time when IU wasn't exactly recruiting the state very hard, so a couple of guys kind of fell into his lap. Who knows if he would/could ever replicate that?

We need to let the guy go for good.

On to the Devries era...
