Impressed that Reneau played 18 minutes with ZERO fouls. FT shooting still needs to improve. 10 TOs for the game is nice to see. Goode has been cold to start, but we know he is a better shooter than what he has shown. He made one that was called back for an illegal screen on Ballo. He will be just fine once he gets in the flow. Just 2 exhibition games so far. 57% on FTs - 8/14... One miss by Dallas James late in the game. He's really not going to play anything other than walk on minutes IMO so I think you can sort of discount that a bit. Tucker missed one, but was 9-12 from the floor. He is a very good shooter. Not worried about him hitting FTs. 70% still wouldn't be great FT shooting as a team, but I was actually encouraged Ballo was 4-6 from the stripe. I recall some teams basically using the ol "hack a Shaq" strategy on him at Arizona last year. Him shooting ~66% from there would take that off the table. Not sure if his conditioning will be able to get to where Woody apparently wants it during the season, but I like Ballo and this roster a hell of a lot. Looking forward to watching them against more legit competition. AZ Hoosier, Dave from Dayton and Joe_hoopsier 3 Quote

FortWayneHoosier Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 I think Goode will be fine once he finds his rhythm. Nothing to worry about. I listened to the whole game on the radio and we dominated as we should have. I think this years team will surprise many in a good way Joe_hoopsier, Home Jersey and lillurk 3 Quote

I hope/trust he will be fine. Agree that 10 to’s was good to see. Even better considering that Dallas, who will almost never play, accounted for 3 of them in only six minutes of play. Rest of the team only had 7 to’s. AZ Hoosier, thebigweave, Joe_hoopsier and 1 other 4 Quote

Golfman25 Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 Not sure what conclusions you can come to playing such an undersized opponent. Tucker looked good. Would like to see him vs equivalent talent. Still seem to have some issues on both sides from 3. We’ll see what we really have come Atlantis time. AZ Hoosier 1 Quote

Stuhoo Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 Thoughts after giving the game a more careful look: Tucker is a very advanced freshman on the offensive end. The body lean and control will minimize turnovers and the stroke is pure and should translate to the 3pt line. His off ball movement is purposeful and high energy. Like Myles he’s a late shot clock shot maker, which is really important to have. Defensively he overplayed help gaps in the first half but was much better in the second. Constantly talking on defense. Hatton is really fluid, borderline ‘quick’ for his size but is not an intuitive defender and is a lousy passer. So many easy passing looks that he missed. On second look I liked Jakai’s debut far more. His defensive discipline was really good and he didn’t try to do too much offensively. The circus shot 3pt play was a product of a very tight handle and Jakai leveraging his strength to get to the rim. His wingspan is crazy and no guard is going to move him. His energy level offensively needs to be better. I could see him taking many of Leal and Cupps’ minutes with Gallo and Kanaan as the backup point. Mack is still getting lost on defense. When Marian shot a bunch of open threes early it was often a Mack breakdown. He’s too good to not play 25+ minutes but he needs a film session. Mack, Malik, and Ballo are all ‘Woodson bigs’ that can handle the ball beyond what their size should allow. Ballo running the floor could be an instructional video for large big men. Goode and Cupps are good position defenders but that’s not enough-even Marian players looked to take them when singled up. Myles Rice is fantastic; intelligent, defensively aware, intuitive, and with a great first step. Calbert Cheaney was doing a ton of coaching and instructing. I don’t think many realize just how good Jakai is. Can’t wait to see him back at 100%. Encouraging that he’s getting game play this early. Dude can soar, has a nice handle, can be a force on perimeter D. Leal and Cupps minutes? Maybe if his return is a slow path, but he could be a much bigger impact player than that — that’s a dark horse position for a real tourney run imo ALASKA HOOSIER and Home Jersey 2 Quote

We shouldn't be seeing a finished product yet. In fact, we don't want to be. How many Purdue teams have peaked in November and ended the season with a whisper in the tourney? So far, this team looks fine. There is plenty of room for improvement, but there should be in November... Quote
