Team definitely needs a rim protector in the portal. He doesn’t need to play 30 mpg alongside Reneau however.

Those two should not play together but if they do only about 5-7 minutes a game.  If Mgbako comes back, he should be the 4, IMO

He will basically need three of the top 25 portal guys. Piece of cake for the nba legend.

Has never happened in the portal era.  Best that has been done is 3 players from the top 50.

MR is a decent player but he is a foul machine. Losing ware is like losing tjd almost. Trying to replace him is going o be an almost impossible task.

But we seem to play faster and better when we only had one big on the floor, the ball didn’t stick

Correct. He is going to be able to do it

Well if they get desperate enough they could way overpay for one if they wanted. Make a guy an offer they can’t refuse

After all, it ain’t Woodson’s money.

No we don’t. We immediately lower our floor the second we commit to playing two traditional big men. Reneau is not a modern 4 in any sense of the word. He’s a small ball 5 who you can protect with good perimeter defense and guards that can rebound. The less minutes Reneau plays alongside a 5, the better chance this team has. It was painfully obvious watching this team try and play two bigs at all times last year. And the two years before with Trayce and Race. IT DOESN’T WORK.

Exactly, I sort of said that in one of my recent posts above

Of course he is, because if he's anything it's an innovator.  :)

Houston doesn’t play a single person over 6’8 and Iowa St has one 6’10 kid who comes off the bench. Easily the two best defensive teams in the country. Their guards are elite defenders and rebound exceptionally well.

It’s because “protecting the rim” is cope for bad defensive coaches who don’t know how to keep people out of the lane or teach position basketball.

You won’t need a rim protector if your defense didn’t allow so many players to get to the rim.

Odds this staff puts together a top 25 roster for preseason?

7%

Odds this staff finishes the season in the top 25?

1%

And more or less, this is their expectation.

Woodson needs

3/4 starters (Mgbako leaves)

3 quality pieces on the bench that fill roles.

that’s sounds like a lot.

a core of
Mgbako Reneau isn’t a bad start…, But still a huge climb

Purdue is a good example. They start two bigs, Edey and Kaufmann-Renn. But:

1. They are surrounded by three guards who shoot it well, and

2. They stagger minutes, so while they do start together, they both see a lot of time at center along a "stretch 4" in Gillis

$6 million it is, that might just get us that one quality guard that really didn’t want to come here in the first place but he just maybe the one to get us over the hump

Again, don’t need 3 top 50 or whatever barometer you’re using.

-Fully expect an upperclassman Reneau to be an all-B10 caliber performer, especially offensively.

-it’s natural to expect MM to take a big leap and become a go to threat

-offer Javon Small, Ryan Conwell, and Jalen Blackmon whatever they want and take commitments from the first two. That becomes your starting backcourt. All three would be even better and allow you to bring Galloway off the bench

-identify a rim protector who you feel comfortable playing 15 mpg and out to 20 in case of foul trouble. Don’t care what he can do on offense so long as he can set a screen, crash the glass, and rim run.

-add 7th/8th man sharp shooting type (Connor Hickman) and bouncy wing similar to Anthony Walker to shore up the front court.

I could 100% get behind this roster next year.

Just replying to the post that said need 3 in the top 25.

Only 1 of those guys even played in a P5 conference against P5 competition.  The other 2 are unproven at that level.  It's a risk.

The issue with Malik is that pesky rule about disqualifying a player after the 5th personal foul.

I’d feel much more comfortable with Malik guarding a traditional big as opposed to chasing a 4 all around the court like he did this season.

Maybe, but he commits some head scratching fouls no matter who he is guarding.

If we are paying 6-8 million for that roster I’d want a refund.

Every other team with half that NIL has a more impressive roster. We will be about a torvik 60.

aint good enough. Probably won’t be.  Maybe eventually I’ll accept that. lol.
