Remember when we all thought we were getting Brad Stevens, like legitimately thought there was a deal being drawn up?  Then he called himself a Masshole and we ended up with Mike Woodson.  The rest of the country had to be laughing.  But then we actually talked ourselves into thinking it may work because he had Dane Fife and Thad Matta to help.  Holy ****, typing that out is depressingly hilarious.

We all thought that.  I was bought in just because of the reason I bolded above.  MW’s ego and arrogance took over and those two were gone pretty much before it really got started and I think the reason why is for the reason most of us didn’t know and that was MW doesn’t report to Dolson and that caused everything to breakdown and MW to get his way.  That should have never been agreed to because that’s caused some issues and that’s why it’s still going to be hard to get rid of him.

I, and I think most, expected Woodson and his NBA cred would allow him to lock down the state talent and bring in high level national recruits and that he would lean on the experienced staff he was given to learn the college game and return IU to being a perennial B1G contender and  tourney second weekend team. Then he would pass the team on to continue it's rise back to prominence

I don't think anyone could have predicted the hubris, laziness, pettiness and contempt.

Exactly, he had the place given to him on a platter to be a "hero."  But laziness took over and now he has tarnished his legacy and is going to go out to a chorus of boos.  Sad really.

Using who you play and where is 100% commonplace in recruiting. Playing a G5 or low major on the road at their place is not. There is a distinction. Both things can be true.

You can count on one hand each season the number of P4 schools who voluntarily schedule true road games against Q3 and Q4 opponents such as Kennesaw State and North Dakota. It is not commonplace in the least because there is literally zero gain.

I'm guessing the Matta and fife thing were done after quinn hired Woodson as a way to try and sell the hire. But Woodson had zero interest in it and this was then doomed from the start. The whole thing was clearly not well thought out or looked at in depth. If this was seriously going to be the plan we may as well kept archie.

I think the reality was that Dolson was trying to make a chit sandwich edible.

Yea.  When Thad left and was not replaced, it was clear the whole story of a new structure with an Associate AD for BBall was all nonsense.

It's f'ing insane, F'ING INSANE, we hired someone that we felt needed help in Thad and Dane.  If an HC needs that sort of help to learn the college game, that's the wrong guy.  And whaddaya know, he was.

The fact no one else wanted him for HC should've said he was the wrong guy.

Did anyone honestly believe we were headed back to titles when we hired archie and Woodson? I certainly did not. I didn't like the archie hire and I hated the Woodson hire. Most national media laughed at the Woodson hire that's how crazy it was.

My last bit of faith died when I waited around for Crean to tear down the program so he could build it exactly like he wanted and he built one team (and awesome one at that) and promptly crapped out and went right back to mediocre. I barely could gather my interest for the Archie years after watching his teams play a little.

I was very skeptical Woody would work out. My interest has somewhat been driven by the new changes with transfers and NIL I have long maintained, before I even joined this board, at such changes would primarily benefit a school like Indiana.  I feel vindicated in that belief, but unfortunately you still need a good coach to steer the ship. Arguably now a good X’s and O’s coach is more important than a good recruiter (the types that have dominated college ball for a while now) because you could theoretically offload ~50% of player acquisition duties to a good GM type.

i’m excited for the upcoming coaching search, simply because they are fun. But I have no confidence IU will get it right.

Are you a Dane Fife fan?  Remember the rumbling that if Mike Davis was not retained, he would transfer.

He’s never registered on my radar enough for me to even consider the question. Let me think…yea, I guess I liked him enough as a player. I was around when he was ipfw and he did a decent enough job, I guess. So…I don’t know…

The broader question is: wtf would the IU administration be listening to a 21 yr old f’n kid? 21 yr old kids are idiots with the worldly wisdom of gnat. Lots of athletes in his position make loyalty plays for their favorite assistants. Why would any adults even listen to it??? It speaks volumes about how unserious an administration Indiana is/was.

If there were an adult in the room and they had told Fife to pack his bags and head for the Michigan border because we have this young coach named Jay Wright we’re bringing in, would anybody even care? Sure, a lot of the old guard would have cried at the time. But by now they would all lie and say they always knew we should’ve dumped Fife, Alford, Buckner, Gonzo et al and went with the talented young guy who brought us more championships.

I can’t wait for a DC search firm to identify Jerome tang as our top target.

“We” didn’t hire him.  This was all Buckner’s doing.  He wouldn’t have been hired if Buckner wasn’t bullying people.

Woodson is a horrible coach that no one wanted to hire... and a loathsome human being...

It's Indiana... It's Indiana.

I don't know if I'd go that far. Large ego and equally thin skin, sure.

They made Davis coach because it was a few weeks before practice was to start at the end of September, and there was no way they were going to get a team together for the season. If you remember, Pat Knight went off on Davis and one of 2 others from the staff that stayed because they weren't being loyal to RMK, but they did recruit those players. Were they just supposed to give up on those kids they made promises or built relationships with?  Knight wrote in his book a few years later that he was trying to stay around because he knew that team had a chance to be special IIRC.  A few years later, I was working in Bloomington helping out our owner's other franchise there (I was working in Evansville) before the fall semester was to kick in, and a guy I was working with knew a handful of boosters at that time.  He told me that several boosters had Pitino lined up to take the job if the administration would've gotten their heads out of their a$$e$ and not want to stick that knife into RMK a little deeper by hiring Davis.  Because from what he said according to the booster is that Davis was decent enough and they really wanted to screw with RMK some more.  Pitino really wanted the job and was choosing between IU, Michigan, and Louisville, and IU was more like UK because of the tradition and the area.  I didn't believe the guy too much till you hear all the stories years later and see the pattern of those in charge just not letting some people do their job.  They need to let Dolson just do his job and make the right hire because I believe that he wants the program back to the top where we want it and belongs.  Also, screw and fire Mike Woodson since he is another result of people shoving their heads in places they don't really belong!!

I heard the Pitino stories as well.  Another great "what if" in IUBB history.

I pray they leave Dolson alone to make this next hire.

Yeah, I didn't believe it too much until you hear all the other stories about people shoving their noses in places it doesn't belong just to make someone angry or to appease someone else.  Successful organizations don't normally do that because they have faith that the people they put in the positions will do their job unlike Woodson who doesn't want to do half of his job.
