Willie Fritz. Has literally won at every level of college football from JUCO to D2 to FCS and now FBS.

I wouldn’t disagree. But he’ll be 64 next season. Why would the IU job appeal to him other than a check? Oh, and he was 2-10 in his 6th year. A year like that just got our guy fired. Kudos to Tulane for riding it out.

I’m not sure what would make the IU job appealing to him, but in terms of the 2-10 in his 6th season, he preceded that with 3 straight bowl games including 2 bowl wins. For a program like IU, if we are going to have some continuity at the head coach position, we should reasonably expect a 2-10 season sprinkled in amongst some mid level bowl games. In fact, sign me up!

I’m willing to look past one year (in which he’s gone 22-3 since) and look at the 4 other programs he’s built over the last 3 decades.

- 2 JUCO national titles at Blinn Junior College

-built Central Missouri into a perennial D2 contender

-built the Sam Houston St program and lead them to back to back FCS runner-up finishes

-Went 17-4 at Georgia Southern in 2 years as they transitioned to FBS

-inherited an absolute dumpster fire at Tulane and has taken them bowling in 5/8 years including a NY6 bowl win last year

If the goal is to hire a program builder Willie Fritz is your guy age be damned. It’s literally what he does. Give me 6-7 years of Willie Fritz over 6-7 of archaic Paul Chryst

I think Jon Sumrall with a good OC hire would be my top choice. Like I said before I can get behind quite a few guys and my top choice has changed about a dozen times over last couple days lol

This would be assuming Gruden is not a realistic option.

Justified or not, Fitzgerald's departure at Northwestern was messy and may take him out of the running at IU.

He'd be a diamond in the rough, and that "stain" on his departure might get him interested in IU.  If that wasn't there, he'd have multiple other opportunities.

Some of these names being bandied about are in their 60s. I have no doubt they're good coaches, and are effective CEOs of their programs, so to speak.

But I'd have a concern about someone like that trying to build a base in Bloomington -- both culturally and recruiting-wise -- for the next 5-6 years, especially as we enter a new era of B1G football.

And yes, before anybody says it -- I know Woody was 63 when we hired him. But that's a little different scenario.

Fritz is awesome.

Fritz is 63; five years older than Chryst.

Fritz is not realistic

Not sure I see Willie Fritz going from “My wife and I decided that I’m going to retire at Tulane” to “I would like to try Indiana Football”.

Fritz very well could be a good hire, but it wouldn't move the needle on my fan meter.

It may, but it shouldn’t.

Agree.  If I'm Northwestern, I would have fired him.  If I'm IU, I would definitely consider hiring him.  Not all fireable offenses are the same.  And if Fitzgerald hadn't had two bad seasons in a row, he might not have been fired.

Why is he not realistic? Because his age or because he wouldn’t take the job? If you think the next hire is going to be here 15-20 years you haven’t followed IU football nearly as long as I thought you have or college football in general. There are very few lifers in this day and age.

Whoever IU hires need to put together the best 5-7 years as possible.

We can't even get coaches to put together 5-7 seasons.
