Lander went to a lower level and contributes, at least, on a team that made the tourney. Sparks averaged about 13 and BSU. Al Durham went and had a nice career at Providence. Franklin continued a solid career at Virginia. Bates is debatable but definitely showed he could score at this level this past year.

Some of it is misidentifying talent but it’s annoying we can’t coax a little more production out of these guys.

Agree…except on Lander.  He’s a fourth year player at a mid major who is a 9 point scorer and whose skill is shooting and he’s just an okay shooter.  He wasn’t a P5 player.

Franklin was the only guy who transferred to another top tier program and maintained or got better. He’s probably the only transfer in the last 10 years that I considered a loss.

Bates did get better.  Still doesn't play defense, but he sure as heck shot the ball better at the train wreck that is Missouri.  Wouldn't call it a top tier program AT ALL but they did play top tier competition.

Absolutely. And if it's a B1G team, Banks is the kind of kid that can come back and torch us for 25.

Banks = Jordan Geronimo, IMO.  I liked their potential as freshman and then by the middle of their sophomore year just seemed to be high level athletic ability with low level skill.  I would be surprised if he's ever a quality P5 starter.

Would be great to see Gunn end up at Butler

Why?  Prefer he go to Purdue..........Fort Wayne.

Some work to get better.  Some do not.  Some coaches are better at pushing their players to improve.  Some are not.

If Gunn finds a coach to calm him down, play under control and shoot on balance, he'll be fine.

No, he's just not that great when there's something on the line. Can't teach that

Good luck to these 3, hope they do well at their next stops. No info, just guessing for craps and cackles:

Sparks - I'd like to see him back at BSU, get 1st team all conference and have fun playing ball again.

Banks - I think he goes closer to home, no idea what his market will be. Best case for him, UGA/GA Tech, probably more likely a GA St. or similar profile school.

Gunn - Not sure what his market will be either. I could see a best case for him of DePaul (Holtmann saw him plenty and I'm sure will need to land bodies) or Missouri maybe (follow in Tamar's footsteps?) ... Maybe more likely at a UT Martin or other OVC kind of school.

IUPUI is going to have plenty of open spots.

The US judicial system basically told the NCAA, "you're not allowed to have rules."

It’s ok. The NCAA always chose when to enforce them and when to look the other way. At least there’s a relatively level playing field now.

Banks will never score 25 in a game.  He can’t shoot and fouls too much.

Yes you can.  It comes from working until you can't get it wrong.  IDK if he has the motivation to put that level of work in -- not many do.

Sparks was actually ranked a top 100 transfer portal player. Basically the portal is slim pickings for true impact players like ware. Most portal guys are nothing special.

Portal guys can help….a lot.

The top 2 scorers for #1 UCONN are portal guys. 3/4 of their top scoring guards are portal guys.

#1 seed UNC has four double point a game scorers. 2/4 of them are portal guys.

#1 seed Houston’s leading scorer is a portal guy

#2 seed Arizona’s top FOUR scorers are all portal guys

#2 seed Iowa State’s leading scorer is a portal guy as are 2/4 of their double point a game guys (and 6/8 of their top scorers)

#2 seed Tennessee’s leading scorer is a portal guy (21.9 a game and their next highest scorer is at 11.9)

Many other examples such as Kansas top 2 scorers are portal guys, etc etc etc.

Sparks was 170th of transfer portal players on 247.  While he may have been in the top 100 when he committed, he wasn't a top 100 portal player.  He committed very early in the cycle and prior to a lot of players entering.

It's a bit misleading to lump anyone who ever transfered in together as "portal guys".

UCONN added just one portal guy to this year's team, Spencer. The others have been there multiple seasons.

Arizona does have two first-year transfers in their top 4 guys. The others you reference have been at Arizona for three years now.

Only two of Iowa State's top 7 are first year transfers.

Most of these examples are good, established programs adding one or two key transfers per season.
