Agree on TJD. He’s just not that good against great competition. They won the Purdue game in spite of him and lost the Illinois game in a large part because of him

Whatever happen to TJD stepping out on the perimeter.  Cockburn gave him that wide open look from 12-15 and Trayce didn’t even look that way.

The defense wasn't good in the second half, but if you can't put the ball in the basket the defense becomes irrelevant.  8 of 27 from the field the second half, 1 of 6 from three, and only 4 free throws.

I know man. Illinois defense is good, but dang we had a week of preparation and a halftime with a lot of really good coaches there to teach so we could expand on our first half successes to turn this game into a big win, knowing Illinois was going to make adjustments and come out better in all phases in the second half. We should know the kinds of adjustments good teams are going to make in the locker room at halftime with the coaching talent we have, and our coaches should be able to communicate what we need to do to win on both sides of the ball in the second half. I really do think we have the talent to have been able to win this game even after falling to down 10ish with 4ish to go. We have enough shooters and playmakers otherwise that with defense we should be able to win a game down 10ish with just a couple of minutes left on our floor. What was weird is that it felt like we were done down 8ish with more than 10 minutes left to play in the game. What was that? It almost felt like an edict from God. What happened?

Not making excuses, I thought the offensive gameplan and/or execution was mediocre at best. But I also think you saw the difference between a coach’s year 5 roster and a year 1 roster today.

IU’s wings are mostly compromise players (pick either defense, ball-handling, or shooting, almost never more than one of the three), it has one dependable guard. That’s a recruiting and development issue. I think we’ve all been pretty pleased with what CMW and co. have done so far but you’re pretty limited on how quickly you can build.

By contrast, Illinois has three dudes who’ve played a ton of games for U of I who are great in their roles (Kofi, Frazier, Williams), and pretty much everyone who plays with those three is a good shooter and defender (they may not do much else; Plummer adds some ball-handling and gives back some D).

Illinois has a roster that fits their program and coach, and it worked today. IU is still building.

Illinois is tough. I was way off thinking Underwood, early in his time at Illinois, would only last a few years.
Kofi is a beast and it really helps him, and them, that they have multiple guys that can both hit the three and take it to the hole.
In the second half we just stood around a lot on offense.

You guys keep talking about Kofi and rightfully so but what about Trent Frazier. He literally controls the game and he did just that again today. Late in the 2nd half, he crossed half court licking his ******* chops because he had bates guarding him. Simple cross over and splash a 3! Trent Frazier is majorly being overlooked. Go ahead and laugh at me, don’t gaf!

Yes, that’s where we need to improve. Hopefully JHS plays as advertised and Bates comes around.

This game is an example why the Big Ten needs drastic changes. This type of win doesn’t do Illinois any type of favors. Big ten players are going to get unnecessary fouls in the dance because no one else plays like this. These refs all need to be fired.

It is not the refs fault they are told to call it that way.

Why would we laugh?  My first second  sentence literally mentioned they have multiple guards that can hit the three and take it to the hole. They have several good  guards that can score from anywhere on the floor and defend.

I feel bad for Trayce. I just don't see how he even gets drafted when he can't bang down low against possible lower level projected NBA prospects, or rebound against other guys who are good, and can't shoot unless he is right underneath the basket against a smaller opponent in the Big Ten/NCAA. He needed to improve and really develop just a few big areas of his game to be the best in the Big Ten, and he really did not do that enough this past offseason and past year. I mean, this year is not over yet, but really we are almost done with this year now, and our best warrior, our best guy was not mocking well in NBA draft mocks before this game, after a substantial portion of the season is now already behind us with warm weather just a few weeks away now. I want TJD back next year I guess as a consolation prize, but really wanted him to be so dominant this year that he worked his way into a lottery position and we could celebrate that life for him. He didn't do that though. Selfishly speaking I would like him back next year leading IU to a championship, but dang, man I really wish he was that guy that wrecks other great bigs in the league on his way to becoming a lottery pick this year. I just don't see how he even gets drafted when he really only beats guys who nobody in the NBA wants.

Fair. Perspective posts are worth considering  in a coach’s first year. Disappointed today  but our goal remains the same: scratch and claw our way into the tourney.

From there seeding and matchups probably dictate if we win any games. But we have a punchers chance to have a fun game or two. Let’s just hope these guys can fight there way in and maybe even stick around that 7th seed range.

Won’t be easy but winning 2 of the next 4 is pretty important in our drive to the dance.  Odds of doing so are minuscule if we don’t win at NW.

@Northwestern
@MSU
Wiscy
@OSU

Yeah, this one was critically important. @NW is a good chance. Wisc is a good chance. The other 2 almost no chance. Getting owned at home for the second time will really dampen the spirits again.

Illinois had more talent, had more toughness than we did today.

X was the only one who seemed to care in the 2nd half.

The strategy of hoping TJD could take Cockburn one on one was a curious one.

I’m glad he benched the starters the last 6 minutes. NW is winnable this week.

@Northwestern

@MSU

Wiscy

@OSU

@NW is about the only one I have any confidence in at that list, and that isn't much.  The rest?  Yikes.
