Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 Tyler Tachman - Just spoke with Tamar Bates. He said his relationship with Mike Woodson was big in his decision to commit to IU: “I knew him while he was in the league coaching the Knicks and winning championships... It was crazy seeing him saying so many good things about me.” Bates said being overlooked has motivated him: “That’s part of the reason that I play as hard as I do... I like it that way. When I perform the way that I do, as a result of the work that I put in, it’s not a surprise to me.” I asked Tamar about his nickname “scoop.” He said his mom gave it to him when he was little because he ate a lot, namely Fig Newtons. One of his mom’s favorite DJ’s was Fatman Scoop. “As I got older, they took off the ‘Fatman’ and just called me ‘scoop’”. IUsafety, 323SGrant, Hoosierfan2017 and 2 others 4 1 Quote

Popular Post IU Prof Posted April 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted April 19, 2021 I was one that was skeptical of whether Woodson would be able to recruit at the level necessary to win in the B1G. And to me, just convincing guys to stay, or getting a player in Johnson who already had a long-time relationship with Kenya, while nice, wasn't super convincing. It's different to come in and convince a kid with whom your staff and school doesn't already have a strong relationship. Bates is a game changer in that regard. Not only is he just the type of recruit that we should be focused on rating-wise, but his recruitment was wide open. To seal the deal with him so quickly is very impressive. Definitely bodes well for the future. INDenizen, kottke, GoIU8 and 12 others 15 Quote

Some of my favorite Hoosiers all time were that early. I agree with Leal and Galloway probably needing to wait and develop, but using Fife as an example of a guy who was rated lower and needed to develop did not fit IMO. Fife was a big time recruit when he got here. Now if you wanted to compare expectations to Greshman results, Lander would be a better comparison to Fife IMO. jhoosier 1 Quote
HoosierFan1994 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 Wow! I did not expect this. Massive get for Woodson and the staff. I would not fall out of my chair if this kid starts next year. He will see quality minutes right away. Quote

Popular Post Hoosierfan2017 Posted April 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted April 19, 2021 From reading Tamar's comments, it sounds like Coach Woodson is really selling his up tempo, NBA style offense. I really hope he's able to get it going in the Big 10. That's the kind of offense that talented kids want to play for. They want to get up and down the floor and take a lot of threes. Archie's offense was so boring. I don't blame any recruits, especially guards, for watching us play and not wanting to come here. I can't wait to see what Woody's offense looks like, and I can't wait for recruits to get to see it too. moyemayhem, Indiana8585, IUrocker and 6 others 9 Quote
