Proposed Men's Bball Rule Changes

Someone shared this on HSN so I thought I'd share it here. The Big East experimented with 6 fouls in the early 90s during league play. It resulted in a ton of FTs. A game that is already getting ugly would get uglier. 

 

I would also point out that currently the NCAA allows players the same number minutes per foul as the NBA at 8 minutes per foul.

40/5 = 8

48/6 = 8

Adding a 6th foul would change that to 1 foul allowed every 6 minutes 40 seconds before fouling out. So instead of making the game more like the NBA, which the NCAA seems to be trying to do, in this aspect they'd be going away from that and making it more like HS ball.

Just the fact that they're trying to also limit it to 4 fouls per half shows that they realize it probably isn't a great idea to go to 6 fouls.

The only chance for possession change is the winning team getting a 5 second violation when they run out of timeouts. Perhaps in the last 2 minutes, a non-shooting foul or a foul in the backcourt results in the team that got fouled being allowed to pick the shooter of players currently on the floor.

If im making rules, it's getting 4 10-minute quarters and keeping the bonus at 7 fouls per quarter. Way less free throws. Way faster game. More flow created. Media timeouts at the under 5 mark, between quarters. 

Agree with everything but the 7 fouls. I would do 5 and eliminate the one and one.

That would be the worst ideal that the NCAA could ever implement

Know what it also eliminates?  The buzzer beating, game winning shots.  Not sure I'm real excited about a 'game winning shot' by a player in an 80-56 game.

Yeah, it’s the one reason I’m not totally on board with it yet....eliminating the chance of a buzzer beater. But on the flip side, every single game would have a game winning shot.
 

As far as the 80-56 game, doesn’t matter how it ends...Elam ending, normal ending, the end to that game is not going to be exciting.

It has the feel of a pickup game at the park where the next basket wins.  I am just tired of people trying to change things in basketball that doesn't need to be changed.  Also with a two hour time frame in the TV schedule this rule could make the games go longer than expected.  This sport had always been about time so why the need to fix something that is not broken.

One of its very specific purposes is to address the fouling/free throw/drawn out end to games we often see now. I think the amount of times a game would last longer b/c of the Elam ending will be very rare. The amount of games that will last less time b/c of the Elam ending will be a lot.

I hate that rule and would never want to see it in an organized game

The NIT did it a few years ago and it was pretty amazing. Very few free throws shot in the bonus.

I love it. Players love it. It encourages offense. It discourages fouling. Endings are often exciting. I think it still needs tinkered to get the exact numbers right, but it’s on the right track.

 

Look up Mo Creeks games this past summer as some evidence. Coaches would learn to coach for this. It’s strategic, and although they aren’t buzzer beaters, every game ends on a winning shot or free throw. Players play extremely hard in Elam Ending.

I have no interest for the Elam ending.  Keep it in all-star games and TBT tournament but keep it far away from college basketball as possible.   Anything that would take away the magic of an ending that the UCLA/Zags game gave us is hard pass in book.  Luckily I will never have to worry about the Elam ending in college basketball.  I have a better chance at becoming ESPNs  full time bracketoligist then the Elam becoming a thing

Maybe but no one is shooting a 38 footer as time expires in a Elam ending game  Elam ending takes those moments away
