They've made a big investment in a core group of players (Rice, Carlyle, Malik & Mgbako). They'd like to see that group return to maintain continuity and not have a total rebuild. I imagine if we lose Saturday that Dolson will start going to off-season mode. I think he realizes if we lose we would probably need 3 wins in the big 10 tourney and would probably like to use that first week especially if we aren’t playing in the tourney to get everything in place. I'm really surprised we haven't heard more by now to be honest, but that just means Dolson is running a really good search. Yes if we lose Saturday watch out. thebigweave, cbp4iu, J34 and 7 others 10
iu2win Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 How many superstar Creighton players can the average IU fan name? It is interesting to at least consider the possibility McDermott could upgrade his tournament success with the players he could get at IU. If he simply manages to regain the advantage IU once had with top rated in-state recruits I would think the overall talent level would exceed what he generally has at Creighton. lillurk, moyemayhem, theriverpilot and 3 others 6

Carlyle seems to be coming into his own, with a new coach Rice could be good, I was originally on the I hope MR leaves but I’ve changed my tune and think in a one big system he is really good, MM I want to know if his issues are with the coaching staff or if he is just lazy and uncoachsble. I’d possibly be interested in Tucker coming back but same questions as MM

Sure, and maybe he would kill it at IU. Who knows? I think a major draw of Cig was the fact that he won everywhere he had been. That made him as much of a "sure thing" as Dolson could have hired. He was actually probably a better choice than many more established higher-profile coaches, just for that reason. McDermott is a very good coach. But, if I'm picking the next coach, I want to know why those 4 years at Iowa State went so poorly. You can't just ignore a bad part of someone's resume. Was it the competition or style of play? Did his coaching style change? Did the resources at his place of employment improve? What happened? Those questions would need to be asked...

Hippopotamo Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 We have to remember that IU basketball and IU football are vastly different programs. With football you can easily hire someone like Cignetti, but trying to replicate that on the basketball side might not be the right move. HoosierDevils, Deserthoozier, Kentuckysucks and 2 others 5

Popular Post moyemayhem Posted March 5, 2025 Popular Post Posted March 5, 2025 I'm not sure why McDermott is viewed as low ceiling. He's 8-4 in the tournament the last 4 years with 2 sweet sixteens and an elite eight. He's finished top 3 in the Big East (a P5 conference) in 8 of the last 9 years, and the one miss was a 4th place finish. How many candidates have a better recent history than him? Why can't he improve on those stellar results with IU's resources and better players? sirhoosierlot, VFury, CSP and 5 others 8

This is a great question and I think increased talent could be huge. Not saying a guarantee, but could be huge. Think about this past year’s IU football team. Really good and got the most out of what they could, but could tell a difference once playing top tier teams. If it is McDermott and with an increase in talent, you never know what could happen. thebigweave, Chris007, iu2win and 1 other 4

His last year he did make a step in the right direction. But Iowa State was a tough place to bring in talent until Hoiberg started bringing in transfers. McDermott has also changed his offense quite a bit, I think. He went 4-12 each year in the Big 12 his last 3 years there. It wasn't getting better. Kentuckysucks 1

The same goes for Cronin or Buzz. I would fall out of my chair if a guy(Stevens, Drew, Dusty, pearl or Otz ) was the hire . BUT I would certainly be intrigued and think there would be some pretty immediate improvements and floor raised. Just about anyone else might make me beat my head against the wall. Chris007 1
