Agreed.

But, for fun, let's say IU can have it's choice of the following (for equivalent money with salary/buyouts). Who do you pick?

Few - Proven winner, but no title. Would likely be hungry to get over the hump here. Probably only has 8-10 years left, max, though.

Drew - Proven, national championship coach. But recent results slipping a bit. Does he still have the hunger? At 54, could be the guy for ~15 years.

Otzelberger- Never advanced beyond the Sweet 16, but has had immediate, impressive success at Iowa State. Clearly still hungry. Could be here 20-25 years if all goes well.

Probably Drew.

Drew. Young enough he can be the coach for a while.  Great recruiter with Indiana ties.  Has a national title so if it doesn’t go as planned no one can really blame Dolson.  The ultimate safe hire.

I totally get that. But the recent slippage, plus the lingering questions of burned bridges with Indiana AAU programs make him a bit risky for me.

I'd have Otz and Few ahead of Drew, but I'm torn on whether I'd pick TJ or Few.

For me it would be Few just based on recuiting record. Few was able to stack rosters before NIL

I’m over coaching search rumors. If someone wants to impress me, find out what that guy said to get thrown out by the ref last night. Not sure the last time I’ve seen that outside of high school ball.

He insulted the official's parents. And in this day and age, you just can't do that.

Don’t count out the guy who is 62 years old, has a top 10 ten team every year,  has lived in the pacific northwest his entire life and in Spokane specifically for 35+ years, and who has passed on numerous NBA jobs and the Arizona job.

Ok

You've obviously never been to Griffy Lake.

Recent slippage is one way to put it. OTOH, this is his first down year in a while and Baylor is still sitting at 30th in Kenpom. He’s a couple years out from a title, which almost nobody working today can say.

Not the easiest place to recruit to either.  It’s a pretty area, but it’s also remote.

Come on Mark, put on your big boy pants, get out of your Spokane comfort zone, and win a title at IU.

Indiana Elite actually taking a stand defending Hanner Perea? lol

I just can't understand having those two ahead of Drew, but I also like those two options.... like a lot.

I've said this a bunch, but... gotta remember they were a 1 seed when Covid hit, too.

The guy recruits nationally—actually internationally—and has had some great rosters. But something about the fit at IU makes it seem like slightly less than a slam dunk to me. And I like Few and the teams he builds a lot.

The Turg (as we like to call him) is per everything I've heard a good guy, an excellent recruiter, and certainly knows the college game.

He's also 60 years old, has been out of coaching for three years, and has a zero chance of being the head coach at IU.

Turg for GM? That I could believe.

Edit: Let me add this -- if we hired a much less experienced guy like McCollum or Schertz, having a guy like Turg along as GM would be an excellent idea.

This makes me wish his name was spelled Turdgeon so we could call him The Turd. I will not apologize for this.

Adam Morrison would have been a hit at IU haha

Amazing how bad our coaching hires have been.  I’m absolutely confident that we’re getting our best coach since Sampson.

If I recall, Miller was considered an "ok" hire at the time due to his past runs with Dayton, but we all know how that worked out.  That's why most here are wary of going with the mid-major flavor of the month type for this hire.  Regardless, you make a good point.  The mismanagement of the IU Basketball brand has been atrocious through some of these past coaching hires and it can only go up from here.
