General Coach Candidate News

In my opinion, the most likely scenario is that Dolson does not have his guy, but that he does have a strong list of top (maybe 3-5) candidates that he is extremely confident he has the resources to land and maybe even has back-channel high interest from a couple.

The telephone game has probably turned that into "Dolson has his guy" by the time that info has gotten to places like this and other fan message boards, etc.

I think this is my read on it as well if being realistic about Stevens. Maybe it is BS, likely is not. But the quiet around it seems to point to Dolson knowing he has options who will take the job that meet the search criteria without off the court issues. This is a positive thing if true in that Dolson didn't get too far down the list.

I think the field also narrows when those factors are input to guys we would probably all generally be pretty happy with. It is hard to look at our job, the revenue sharing, proven NIL, fan support, and not think this search could certainly play out differently than the UK or UL searches (just an easy example of schools that got deeper into the wish list so to speak).

So let's say our someone (anyone) says yes before we are finished playing (or has)  - what's the pros and cons of when we announce? - my 2 cents:

1) As soon as they sign even if we are playing still. Anytime from now to end of NCAAT.
  - ~1% chance. My thought is this is highly unlikely while we are playing. No need to undercut team. Then why even 1% chance? I say 1% cause I feel like this is something that would happen if CW goes off the rails and walks or team issues that aren't easy to ignore. No information - just justification for 1% vs 0%.

2) As soon as IU is finished playing (or the next day). i.e. BTT lose or NCAA loss - if we get in.

- ~30% chance. I'm mixed on this - why announce right after a downer? But why not announce as soon as  possible?

3) A couple days after/right before a big tourney weekend.  i.e. we lose on a Saturday - season over - wait till following Thursday so it hits a lot press during Tourney weekend.

 - ~25% chance - Time it for impact but let team/coaches do last of season press so they aren't asked their opinion repeatedly. No reason for them to have to address this and little advantage to announcing right after a loss.

4) Weekend before march 24 (portal opens) - so Mar 22/23.
 - ~20% chance. Lotsa good press since that will be a weekend with a lot of eyes on cbb and high impact would make the talk of a lot of halftimes. That can only help recruiting.

5) As soon as our new Coach is ready to announce - may be playing?
- ~20% Speaks for it's self - new coach let them have some control of message and date/time of announcement.

6) Forced into it - meaning timeline is pushed up.

- ~4% Comes out early and the AD wants to control the spin so they announce as soon as the leak goes out.

Thoughts?

So I couldn’t get much from him unfortunately. But, to me that’s a good thing. There’s been pretty much zero chatter, nor leaks for a month about coaches. He said it doesn’t matter that the season is still going on, he would still hear of legitimate names. And he hasn’t. I asked him if the “5 min zoom call” was legitimate. He laughed and said no. No one at brads status would only give 5 min of time. That’s disrespectful.

I also asked if he heard the $100 million number and if there was a verbal agreement (which came from the IU sources via Chris, Yeagley, etc). He hadn’t heard that but he did confidently say Brad turned down a 7 year 70 million offer last time. I asked if I should trust the IU sources from a weeks ago, and he said at this point I could, because it’s eerily quiet on his end. He thinks Dolson has known for months who the next coach will be. That’s all I’ve got.

That's a banger

Don’t count out the guy who is 62 years old, has a top 10 ten team every year,  has lived in the pacific northwest his entire life and in Spokane specifically for 35+ years, and who has passed on numerous NBA jobs and the Arizona job.

Ok

Still more likely than Turgeron lol

Sounds like a person who knows he has peaked there, and might be ready for a new challenge while he still has the passion and fire to coach.

My interpretation of the Athletic Department releasing next year’s games despite not having a head coach (that we know of):

”Buckle up, the future is going to be great and you won’t want to miss out.  Buy those season tickets.”

It used to kill me seeing empty balconies at Midnight Madness-  now empty balconies at Big Ten games?!?  It’s crazy the levels of apathy bad basketball has driven this fanbase to.

I think it depends which school of thought you want to believe. If Dolson has his guy, or options of guys not named Bradley, they're going to be playing basketball still. Likely beyond when IU is not. If the coach isn't currently coaching I would expect an announcement within 48 hours of our season being over. I think that will be the lynchpin here. If we do not get an announcement soon after our season, and the tournament is (presumably, unless we win the whole thing lol) still being played I would expect delays with a whole lotta smoke and rumors flying. My guess, probably close to bullet 4. It is going to be a long few weeks.

I wouldn't count out Mark Few. I know he hasn't been talked about by the national media but before the season even started there was some back channeling going on.

The loaded non conference schedule actually made me think Few may be behind it.

I have not been interested in attending many games this season. I have said no thanks more times this season than in my previous 47 years of living.

Well my dear friend I hope you will reconsider....We live in world where there are games and these games must be attended by guys like you.....who else is going to do it? Lieutenant Truthhurts?  We need you on that wall. We use words here like honor, code, and loyalty!  So get back to those games Chris.  Get back on that wall and protect the honor of our board!

Or you could take the night off from the coaching search and watch Teri Moren and the women’s team.

For sure. However for me there is no nights off in watching college basketball.   I will be locked in the college basketball thread watching the battle for first in the SoCon

Chattanooga/UNCG tonight at 7 on espn +.  IU played them both this year
