The guy recruits nationally—actually internationally—and has had some great rosters. But something about the fit at IU makes it seem like slightly less than a slam dunk to me. And I like Few and the teams he builds a lot.

Adam Morrison would have been a hit at IU haha

Amazing how bad our coaching hires have been.  I’m absolutely confident that we’re getting our best coach since Sampson.

If I recall, Miller was considered an "ok" hire at the time due to his past runs with Dayton, but we all know how that worked out.  That's why most here are wary of going with the mid-major flavor of the month type for this hire.  Regardless, you make a good point.  The mismanagement of the IU Basketball brand has been atrocious through some of these past coaching hires and it can only go up from here.

Thanks for posting this. It's really some fascinating stats.

Archie was the safe hire. He was young and had some success at a basketball school. While his personality was probably not the best fit, most people thought he would have a solid career (including myself).

The guy worked his tail off, it just didn't work out.

If those are the options my order would be Drew, Few, Otz. Drew and Few are in a different level of no-brainer. Otz is no-brainer lite. And the gap between Drew/Few and Otz would be pretty wide for me. That just being extra elitist though if these are the three options.

Recent slippage is one way to put it. OTOH, this is his first down year in a while and Baylor is still sitting at 30th in Kenpom. He’s a couple years out from a title, which almost nobody working today can say.

He also hasn't had a top-75 defense in three years. This is his best of the three; Indiana is currently 17 spots above Baylor on defensive efficiency according to Torvik. Think we can be honest about there being a legitimate defensive fall-off over the last three years, and still entertain the idea that IU would give the support to turn that around.

Mike Davis wasn’t qualified to coach BSouth when hired.  Sampson was great but couldn’t follow the rules.  Crean was very weird and an average coach at best.  Had 4 of the worst seasons in program history at Georgia before being fired.  Is now completely unhireable.  Archie…see the Tweet above.  Woodson no comment needed.

You really have to ask yourselves just how incompetent is the Indiana administration?

I've said this a bunch, but... gotta remember they were a 1 seed when Covid hit, too.

Yeah; he was elite before everyone could pay players! For my money, he would likely enough be elite at IU, where he would have the resources to get whoever he wants. Just think we do have to acknowledge that Baylor has really slipped over the last three years, and there were some pretty significant changes to the college basketball recruiting structure during that time...

Never really thought Baylor as a Top 10 was sustainable, so I don't agree with some big slip that you're seeing.

But, still... having him below TJ O is truly sort of baffling to me, I guess maybe Few is his equal? But Few plays in a Mickey Mouse league.

In the same breath... yeah you might be exactly right.

Agreed.

But, for fun, let's say IU can have it's choice of the following (for equivalent money with salary/buyouts). Who do you pick?

Few - Proven winner, but no title. Would likely be hungry to get over the hump here. Probably only has 8-10 years left, max, though.

Drew - Proven, national championship coach. But recent results slipping a bit. Does he still have the hunger? At 54, could be the guy for ~15 years.

Otzelberger- Never advanced beyond the Sweet 16, but has had immediate, impressive success at Iowa State. Clearly still hungry. Could be here 20-25 years if all goes well.

Otz, easily.
