It's just hard to know what to believe. I'm not discounting anything anyone's saying, just trying to figure out what's real and what's not.

I disagree with this.  If you made an elite 8 run every five years and coached 20 years I think all but the nuttiest of fans would be good.  You’d have to think at least one of those turns into a final four.  
 

and you would assume if you got 4 elite 8’s you probably rack up say min 6-8 sweet sixteens.

That’s a lot of assumptions for how our fans have historically acted or in general of an open ended situation.  They would not look at that Elite 8.  They would ask what you did in those other 4 years because the Elite 8 is expected.
