This. Retirement age in the coaching profession is not even close to what all of us view as our target retirement age. Some do retire early and some coach until damn near 80. So while yes DM could retire in 5 years, he could also retire in 20.

I thought everyone was told to stay quiet and had to sign NDA. If this is the case how are people getting all of these inside info. Face it, no one knows a damn thing.

Not a bad thing depending on what kind of results he produced while in his 5-6 years.   If he comes in and fails then time for IUBB to take a look in a mirror if a successful sitting power 5 coach comes in and gets the same mediocre results then I agree it’s a bad fit for both however if in those 5-6 years he came in and produced results similar to what he is doing now or produced better results then then if he decided to retire after those 5-6 years and left the place better then where it is at then I would be fine with him leaving.  IU is in no position to turn their nose up to a coach like him like some posters on here do

From McDermott's perspective---How many people nearing the age of retirement take at best a lateral job move? And yes, Creighton is a better basketball program than IU right now. McDermott failed at his first P5 gig and then reinvented himself at Creighton, turning them into a consistent top 25 program. He has it made in Omaha doing things his way in a complete stress-free environment. Why leave a program that is currently rolling to take a job that turns and burns coaches like a temp agency? Retire a legend at Creighton or potentially be run out of town in Bloomington is something to seriously ponder.

From IU's perspective---You're about to hire your 6th coach in 25 years. Your fan base is nuts and starving for success. You have zero culture or foundation of which to work with. Do I really want to hire a guy who will be 61 when next season starts? Do I risk a guy nearing the age of retirement getting burned out in a fishbowl job if things go south?

He'd be a solid hire as he'd raise the floor and have IU making the tournament consistently. But I don't think McDermott is going to deliver you a national title in a 5-6 year span. McDermott is a bridge hire, someone that should have been hired to replace Crean. I think there's a good chance we're doing this all over again in 5-6 years if you hire McDermott.

Exactly. It totally depends on the individual. Some 65 year olds have more energy and drive than some 55 year olds. Some don't. You need to evaluate each candidate on what they have left in the tank, not what age they are.

I'd also say, for that matter, that I wouldn't rule someone out just because they only have 5 or 6 strong years left. We could use 5 or 6 really good years to get the program back on track.

Better that than someone who is 50-50 to get canned in 4 or 5 years after a bunch of so-so (or worse) seasons.

Man IUFB insider poster got the peegesters all going last night the Rabjohns only could in his wildest of dreams . 
 

- he said he’s not ready to completely discount Stevens but even people on IUs end think it’s crazy . 

- says McCollum is definitely a candidate but far from a done deal and Iowa potentially opening os something he wouldn’t bet on McCollum being the next coach 

- said Gun to his head there are a handful of Big 12 coaches he would bet IUs next coach comes from there .

When you listen to the guy talk the game and his players there are 2 qualities he clearly values more than anything else, self-motivation and mental processing speed. And given how much motion he runs and how much read and react they have built in that makes perfect sense. I don't remember Bo Ryan a lot of highly ranked players yet he was able to win over 70% of his games at Wisconsin and make tournament runs. I don't follow UW closely so I may be remembering that incorrectly but that's how I remember them during his time - a bunch of 3 star and below players just killing it and pwning IU in the process. Maybe the occasional 4*.

Hopefully Goodmans history of tweeting "leaks" inaccurate coaching info helped eased everyone's minds. Persolly I am huge on McCullom. But certainly not a fan of 50% of the board loathing the idea.
