Brownell is not out of the running in the same way Beard is not out of the running. They want the job and haven't said no. Means nothing at this point in the search. Could it be either of them? Sure. Likely is not, we are going to hear a bunch more agent driven nonsense before this over. It really has not even started yet since we are obviously targeting sitting head coaches who are still playing basketball. I don't expect anything concrete until after conference tourneys at the absolute earliest, and only if we are gonna hire a cat not in the NCAAs.

I agree.  All of those coaches are getting ready for the tournament.  Would any of them, or their agents actually show any interest in taking another job at this time?  I'm guessing even if they are interested, if asked if they would take another job, they would all say "not interested, I'm with my team."

Exactly how many years did it take McCollum to figure out D1 from D2?

He had a great first year at Drake, definitely. Drake wasn’t exactly in the dumpster when he took it over, and he benefited from continuity by bringing over many of his players. IU will basically have an empty roster heading into the transfer portal. Can be navigate the portal to build a team on the fly that can compete in the Big 10 next season?

If IU hired Brownell they'd just be telling us to spend our time and energy elsewhere, because they don't want the program to actually win.

I wouldn’t go that far either.  I think it shows they felt that was the best option to win within their current situation.  You have 30 years of inconsistency in this fishbowl.  Nothing but failures.  Many coaches have zero ambition if they are ultra successful to come here.  If it was Duke or Kentucky after 10 years down?  They could still get someone.  30 years of mediocrity.  Someone is going to have to win to make Indiana what you, I, and others here feel Indiana is.  Outside perception just is not that.

To answer that question, it would have to be seen.  But I do question your take on the take on Drake…his continuity is with D2 players.  And if it were just continuity, MVC teams would have caught up by the end of the year.

They told us that when they hired Mike Woodson. This would just be doubling down and leaving no doubt.

Yep. Just keep giving them our money and shut up about results.

Has I’ve said before, besides Beard, Brownell, and the other names etc…don’t be shocked if we land a high major that nobody is talking about.

With mid-major coaches, you have to determine if they are winning because of their X's and O's or if they are simply out recruiting their mid-major competition and have better Jimmys and Joes.  Because that recruiting doesn't always carry over when you go up a level.

Yep and he didn’t have to manage massive NIL , deal with Agents, truly recruit the portal , and navigate crazy high expectations in arguably the top conference in the country going against other top coaches .

again you don’t get 3-4 years to rebuild in todays college basketball as I mentioned Oral Roberts fired their coach after just 2 years. Say what you will about Woodson it’s not like McCollum would be taking over after Archie . IU is likely to have had 3/4 years in the tourney . He’s gotta do better than Woodson and that’s make the tourney every year and finish i the top half of the Big Ten . If he can’t do that within the 1st 2 years it’s right back to square 1

The above having been said, I will also say that Goodman's tweet is once again kind of vague about what's sourced and what isn't.

The favorable interpretation - Jeff heard from an agent that a guy who clearly would be down our list was just contacted for the first time by IU. This leads him to conclude that Drew, Otz, etc., are out if we're only now reaching out to 3rd tier candidate.

The less favorable interpretation- Jeff knows first hand that Drew, Brad, and Otz are all out, since he's close to all of them.

My intuition is #2, but my heart hopes it's #1.

Given Goodman’s follow up tweet about IU should just hire Beard, I think it’s nothing more than Beard’s agent confirming to Goodman what we already knew (Beard is being vetted). And he either knows, or very likely correctly assuming, that means those guys he listed are out. Just my opinion.

We’re gonna look back on last year’s decision to retain Woodson as a major inflection point in Indiana basketball history, and not in a good way.

We could’ve had Dusty May or Bruce Pearl. Instead we’re left with nothing but scraps because most coaches don’t want to deal with the cluster**** that is Indiana.

I trust Scott Dolson. The issue is that he was not permitted to do his job last year, and it put Indiana’s dysfunction on full display and scared off many high level coaches. It’s entirely possible that IU still lands a big time coach. But I’m more and more worried with every day that passes.

I think he could fall back to the Woodson recruiting method.. go to rankings, offer each a mil, go golfing.

The problem is Dolson isn't allowed to hire whoever he wants.  If he was I'd have little doubt we'd get someone very good.  The administration and some big donors have winning way down on their list of priorities.

Rabby now says that Brownell is not out of the running.

To be fair, most writers are going to say the exact same names. Anyone with an Indiana connection will be listed, mid major coach or the year mention, whatever.

This process has been extremely quiet, there was smoke for a while before people got told to quiet down. It’s also been the longest process due to the timing or Woodson being fired mid to late season. We’re almost to the finish line.
