Gotta adapt to survive in the modern era of college basketball. Going to be pretty tough to build a program/culture with any real continuity taking a portal first approach though, I'd think. Hope we can make it work each season For the record, I don't love the portal. But as things stand, we have embrace it or get buried by it. Popular Post Stuhoo Posted April 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 9, 2023 The portal gets you mentally strong 22 year olds, who will regularly kick the crap out of 18/19 year olds. Banksyrules, NVFalcons1990, MemphisHoosier and 11 others 14 Quote
RaceToTheTop Posted April 9, 2023 Posted April 9, 2023 To my line of thinking, if there was anything to Ward, Ledlum AND DeLoach all coming to IU that might mean Reneau would be transferring. Zero knowledge of anything like that and I don’t see all three coming but the truth is I like all four of those players including Reneau. Anyway, it will all get sorted out. Ngw7183 1 Quote

On the reverse side, it does get low to mid majors some talented players that would not likely have left a major to go there. And last season’s tournament showed that it actually created more parity not less. The losers still seem to be the incoming freshman though. lillurk 1 Quote

Given his coaching background, I could see CMW liking the portal option much better. It has that NBA free agency feel all over it. The upside is experience, maturity, performance record, and greatly reduced time expenditure. From a coaches viewpoint, what's not to like. I agree 100%. Those that adapt to the changes in the best way reap the rewards. Kentucky was early and the best in the one n done era of recycling top talent. They had pretty good results with it. The landscape has changed. More options out there to roster build. I also hope it somewhat tamed the dramatics of the high school kid having ALL the power and brings recruitments back to life a little. id say you always have roster spots 11-13 to play with. But you want 1-10 to be dudes. At least 1-8. Anyway. Scouting becomes even more important. Scotty R, Hoosierfanyuh, RaceToTheTop and 2 others 5 Quote

OliviaPope40 Posted April 9, 2023 Posted April 9, 2023 My dad and I were talking about this last night but me our troubles started long before Sampson when the university thought holding Knight to a zero tolerance policy was going to work which it didn't had Knight not done what he did with Neil Reid he would've gotten to pick the next coach instead of letting the university decide it for him and the program would've been different than where we are now. I just don't know how different things would've been either had Sampson did what he did forget the argument that what he did is now legal that to me is beside the point and Dakich likely doesn't get a chance to coach. We also had the whole bumper sticker issue too which we also reported. Quote

They wanted Knight gone but were too cowardly to outright fire him so they made that policy so they could claim that it was with cause. Joe_hoopsier, jonz44, 8bucks and 3 others 6 Quote

People complained about the one-and-done system. The transfer portal is very similar. You might land players who stay for more than one year. But the highly rated ones like Ware are looking for a school that can help them get to the NBA in one year. Quote
