It also still doesn't answer why we keep playing Smith out of position? College coaches break promises all the time. They lie during recruiting all the time. Why would Archie feel like this one promise has to be kept while the house burns down around him? Tell Smith it was a fun experiment, but it hasn't worked out and that he's going back to the 4 because that's where the team needs him. Simple as that.

Was this all sprung on Archie after the fact?  Did he not expect the problem with the players to be as bad as it seemingly is?  Why would any coach go into a job with these conditions?

I'm not sure.  Perhaps it was the lure of an average salary of 3.35 million per year?  Haha!

I would have gone all in and let the players talk smack as much as they liked.  I'm guaranteed to bring home a lofty 3.2 million in my second year, so what do I care?  That's enough for me to be canned and enter retirement at my youthful age...or at the very least, it's enough to scrape by on.

Pssst: Rumor has it that Justin Smith now wants to play 'goalie'.

:)                (too much?)

Funny, but totally inaccurate. He doesn't strike me as the goalie type. He'd demand to play right wing -- on the first line -- even though he can't skate and can't shoot.

If Smith is this all destructive cancer as is being alluded to and yet the staff feels he's critical to the team's success then oh boy. What does that say about the rest of the roster (which is mostly Archie recruits) and how does that give anyone confidence that he can identify talent that will help him win? He's playing the most detrimental piece (allegedly), and not very productive to boot, a significant amount because he hasn't found anyone better in 3 years. Blame the players all you want but if you can't see the forest through the trees then I don't know what to say.

Well I am sure like most everything the truth is somewhere in the middle for a lot of things. Do I think IU fires Archie this year? Nope. Should they if we make the tourney? In my opinion no. That was my baseline for him to buy a 4th year. Progress from last year. Should they if we don’t make the tournament? Without hesitation. It is year 3. Even though I wouldn’t, would I understand if they fired him after these 3 years at IU? Absolutely. There would be no argument from me if they did after this in spite of what I would do. I think that’s the disconnect from the “positive” to the “negative” side in all of this. I don’t think we are all that different in our thoughts. I just think in this environment it’s hard to really gauge what a person truly thinks. Nobody would ask either side those questions above. Both sides would wait for the first opportunity to pick something that fits their narrative. I am as guilty as anyone for that stuff. But I don’t think anyone on this board is as far apart as they think.

Without a significant development on the administrative side, I don't see him going anywhere. Unless they somehow in the next month or so pull a new AD out of the hat, I think Archie stays. I believe (not totally sure on this) that Glass is leaving in May. They certainly don't want him making the decision on Archie's fate. That'll be up to the new AD, and if they don't have a one until then -- that's not an optimal time to be to be looking for a basketball coach. The timing for a firing of Archie just doesn't work. At least the way things stand now.

Yeah I anticipate it will be a very short leash from the new AD unless it’s Dolson. With how successful everyone feels the athletic office is I figure that’s where we go.

So I could have been a gynecologist after all if I'd just told my banker bosses I was unhappy?
I'm not mocking Chris in any way.  I just don't know what to make of this whole situation.  It's become surreal and comical in a sad way.  The inmates have apparently taken control of the asylum.  For the life of me I can't fathom why Archie didn't tell Glass to  shove it up his lawyer a$$ when told after the fact he couldn't get rid of players.  He'd have found another coaching position and had he gone public with why he immediately quit, Fred and IU (sadly) would be complete laughingstocks.

Love the passion OF. Love it. Indiana administration has long been laughingstocks. How they handled the SampsonGate and it appears set the program in a pit it may never recover from, really irks me. Especially this year, seeing Sean Miller, Wade, Sampson and Pearl coach and succeed.

If half the stuff I have read is true then iu basketball is dead. Every year we suck though we look for reasons why. Last year players were sleeping with other players girlfriends. This year it's a combination of players listed for various reasons lol. I miss when crean was here and he through players under the bus for us so we didn't have to figure all this out on our own. Good old days when troy Williams made kids transfer. Those were the days. If anything is true archie is finished

I think he gets next year because that is the critical season. After that, you pretty much have to do one of two things: Fire him and move on; or extend him. Next season is the fourth year of a seven-year contract. So barring any changes before then, after next year, Archie is down to three years remaining. For recruiting purposes, you don't want your coach at a Power 5 basketball program having less than four years on his contract. That's why you cut bait or add another year to his contract (or two, depending on how things shake out next season).

To me the fact we hired Archie signaled we were dead.

Look at some recent(relative) blue blood hires

UNC - Got a coach who had success at a high level

Kansas - Got a coach who had success at a high level

Louisville Pitino - Got a coach who had success at a high level

Louisville Mack - Got a coach who had been successful at multiple places making tourney 9 out of 10 years

Kentucky - Got a coach who was a success at multiple programs

Archie doesn’t seem similar to any of those

Just so you know Smith is playing the position he wants the 3, he would like to play the 2 some. This was the compromise the staff made with him this summer as he was unhappy and difficult last season because he had to play the 4. Now after getting what he wants, he's still causing problems on the court, in the locker room.

He could work at the 3 if we had a Watford at the 4.

A thought experiment: if Dayton lost either of its down-to-the-wire first weekend tournament games the year it went to the elite 8, is he even a candidate when IU is looking?
