Do you think Bennett gave a crap that when Kihei Clark decommitted from UC-Davis that Virginia fans were mad when he offered a 5’9 393 ranked kid? Probably not he thought he could help his program win. Worked out pretty nicely for Bennett since Clark make the biggest play in recent Virginia basketball history. Not bad for a 5’9 393 ranked freshman Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Ah, this old argument. I suppose all of our 3 stars have turned out like Victor Oladipo and OG Anunoby too. If you want to find evidence of a low-ranked kid making a big impact, I'm sure you'll find plenty of examples to support your case. But I can find twice as many players who were ranked right around where Kihei Clark was that never made any sort of impact at the high major level. I know it's fun to sh1t all over rankings, but face it, they are right more often than not. DChoosier and Iugradman 2 Quote

Face it plenty of quality players outside the top 100 that contribute to high major, mid major, and low major teams. I have no problem with the ranking and scouting services, I actually go to these recruiting events and talk rankings and recruits with most of them. I also know its impossible for these people to see all these kids play and they know it as well. So many more under ranked kids make an impact for their schools then most want to acknowledge. 353 D-1 schools and only 100 top kids each year. That leaves a lot of playing time for “3 stars” to make an impact for their schools. Luckily coaches recruit whoever they want despite the noise from keyboard experts that knows whats best. Popular Post Old Friend Posted April 2, 2019 Popular Post Posted April 2, 2019 Here's the problem with rankings. They don't measure anything...not one thing that measures how a kid will fit into a college program or team; how hard he'll work; or how coachable he is. Rankings are based largely on AAU performance and on high school stats. Wanna' know how unreliable rankings are? In one rankings system, Zion Williamson was the #5 ranked player in the 2018 high school class. Romeo Langford was #6. There may be no bigger gap this side of the Grand Canyon than 5 to 6 in that system. Same system? Phinisee was unranked until March of last season and ended #131 or something. Texas Tech has not a single top 100 kid on the team. Not one 2018 top 100 kid will see minutes in this year's final four. But you know who will? Great team mates. Great defenders. Complete players. Champions. Auburn won the SEC tournament. MSU won the Big Ten tournament and regular season championship. Texas Tech won the regular season Big 12 Championship. Virginia won the ACC regular season championship. There are high profile recruits here and there; but the top ranked kids who were playing in last season's McD's all American game? Watching on TV. Rankings are also based on measurables. How high can a kid jump? How well he can shoot. His length. Not one thing measures how a kid will succeed as a college player outside of raw athletic ability; and I'm watching how the college game is played now? With screening and cutting at a premium and shooting even MORE at a premium; and team defense/taking away transition the most likely indicator of success? I just don't see the top rated players succeeding in a game that requires such a "team" concept. I want talent; but give me program kids who know how to play the game of basketball; not just the sport. thebigweave, BGleas, Class of '66 Old Fart and 14 others 17 Quote

8bucks Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Ranking does not matter nearly as much as getting the kids you target. Franklin for example looks to be a good pick up and even though his ranking is lower he was someone that the staff targeted and went after. Same with Rob. Many of the 2019 kids were have been talking about the last couple of days were not kids we targeted but kids we are going after now that targeted kids have said no. It is harder to get excited about them or feel their rankings don’t matter Hopefully we can pick up the grad transfers we target - our first choices. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Quote

The obvious is they've had multiple years of far more competitive basketball than what most freshmen face in their high school careers. Also, they've dealt with the transition from being the high school star to a role player, dealt with the higher intensity of coaching, learned to balance basketball with their studies and learned to balance their basketball life with their college social life. Walking Boot of Doom Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 The rankings are reliable, but as the class becomes upperclassmen player development and a lot of the unmeasurables help even the playing field. Rankings just say, in high school, this kid was ranked X mostly based on past performance. You can find good players ranked poorly, but it’s on the coach to develop them into that contributing player like the ones we see in this year’s Final Four. My dog Ruby could have done a better job guessing on the evaluation on many guys who will play in Minneapolis this weekend."
